47 Ronin Review

So Keanu Reeves is back and he’s playing a kick ass half breed that whoops some serious ass in this movie. I know 47 Ronin has gotten a lot of hate and honestly I don’t know why. I thought this movie was pretty damn good. I don’t know what people were expecting when they went to see this movie. Keanu Reeves plays Kai, a half breed that no one seems to like or want around because he’s different but they later learn to accept him because they literally have no choice because their master is killed and Kai is one of the few people willing to help them get their revenge. From what I thought was a pretty good start to the movie kind of slowed down and dragged along for a little bit before anything happened.

47 Ronin pictureAfter the first action sequence it takes quite a while for another one to happen and we’re led from scene to scene. I personally thought this movie paced well enough not to bore me and the fact that Hiroyuki Sanada is in the movie made it that much more awesome for me to watch. Everything that man touches is gold in my eyes. I think Rinko Kikuchi was a good villain and played her part well and throughout the entire movie I was really impressed at how evil she was. She was straight up bitch in some scenes but that oddly made me love her that much more.

When I saw Keanu Reeves kicking ass with a Katana my mouth dropped. I couldn’t believe that he did it so well. I also loved watching him go Matrix in a certain scene that I will not spoil for those of you that has not seen this film yet.

While the action sequences in the movie are good and the view at times is breathtakingly beautiful this movie suffers from a lack of character building moments with just about everyone. I didn’t really care about anyone in the movie except Kai, Mika, and Kiranosuke Oishi. I thought the relationship between Kai and Mika was weak but it wasn’t entirely nonexistent. I liked how Kai and Kiranosuke went from being enemies to respecting each other by the end of the movie, and I loved the duel that they had with each other. That was actually my favorite part of the movie.

For a movie that based off of Samurai’s and Witches there is very little blood in this film. When you see a Samurai take their own life to regain their honor it’ll only show their face and quickly move to another scene. Whenever someone gets decapitated they’ll only show the upper body of the person killing them. I wish it was more like The Last Samurai with things like that.

47 Ronin isn’t going to redefine Samurai Movies but I did enjoy it a lot and I wouldn’t mind watching it again. The action is solid and I thought the acting was really good by just about everyone in the movie but there is no gore, and not enough blood for a movie to be set in such a violent time period and there is little to no character building and that really brings the movie down.

Our Verdict: 7/10

  1. What could have been… I did see the other ‘recent’ Keanu Reeves movie the other day when he is a nasty fight promoter in Hong Kong…that I thoroughly enjoyed. Man of Tai Chi…

  2. It wasn’t the worst thing I’d ever seen. Just a bit too dull for its own good, when it should have been fun, exciting and a lot more over-the-top than what it turned out to be. Good review.

    1. I think I liked that it wasn’t over the top like most films nowadays are. The Last Samurai wasn’t over the top and I really loved that movie. I just think that if they made the characters more lovable then what they were the movie could have been better.
