Game Dev Tycoon Review

I tried out a game called Game Dev Tycoon the other day. It’s a game about making games. Game Dev Tycoon is a simple game though. There’s not much to actually do in the game besides watch your character and his team sit at their desk and create games. I would have loved to participate in interviews, and go to press events but that’s absent here.

Instead all we get to do is create a game, release it, wait for the reviews to come in and hope that if sells well. You can research new technologies as time progresses and new consoles come out. That’s cool but at the same time it could have been so much more.  It’s not bad for a first try though because this game is addictive. If a game that you poured a lot of resources into flops and you lose a lot of money in the process you’ll have to come up something fast to make up for your losses or you could go bankrupt. You might even have to fire a few employees from your team and that sucks.

05af5d25308b9f0d846ff3b3f3612fcdIf one of your games that you thought would do well only gets a 6 but 4 million people end up buying it then that’s not really considered a loss because the fans would love but the reviewers wouldn’t. That’s happened to me before and it was great. Some times you’ll even have a game score a 8 or 9 but it’ll only sell 1 million copies. Why? Because you chose to release it for the wrong console. What you rate a game also determines how well it will do on a specific console but that’s not always the case. One time I released a rated M spy game on the 3DS, it’s not actually called the 3DS in the game, and it sold over 10 million units and got straight 10’s down the board.

It might all seem random but it’s not. If you can beat your previous high score every time you release a game then you’ll most likely get positive reviews but if you can’t then you’ll most likely only get average ones. It’s something that I don’t like about the game but it’s also something that I’ve gotten used to as I’ve been playing.

Game Dev Tycoon isn’t for everyone. There isn’t a lot to do here but it is addictive in a way. You’ll constantly want to beat your own high scores to get better ratings on your games. This game can be annoying though. Especially if you play for over an hour because it continuously plays the same song over and over again but this is a good game that’s worth looking into if you’re a fan of games in general and that earns it my recommendation.

Our Verdict: 7/10

  1. There is a similar game on Kongregate called Game Corp. It’s quite a lot of fun trying to come up with game titles to see if the title makes money based on it’s real identity, such as Half Life.

    1. It’s not very deep at all considering my game reviews are usually 1,000 words or longer and I barely managed 500 here. The game is fun though and it’s a good time killer.
