Classic Friday – Golden Axe Review

Every Friday everyone here at will review a classic game from our past. I decided that my first Classic Friday Review will be on the very first Golden Axe game. The first Golden Axe game actually released on the arcade back in 1989. It did so well that it was ported to the Mega Drive/Genesis in December.

Golden AxeAn evil entity known as Death Adder has captured the king and his daughter, and holds them captive in their own castle. He soon finds Golden Axe, the magical emblem of Yuria, and threatens to destroy pretty much everything under the sun. Three warriors set out on a quest to stop Death Adder. The first is a dwarf that wields a giant battle-axe, Gillius Thunderhead, from the mines of Wolud. His twin brother was killed by the soldiers of Death Adder. The second is a barbarian named Ax Battler. He wields a two handed broadsword. He is looking for revenge for the murder of his mother. The third warrior is a long sword wielding amazon named Tyris Flare. Her parents were murdered by Death Adder himself.

The story of Golden Axe is a simple one. Clear each stage and kill the boss at the end of them. Along the way you’ll rescue peasants and kill a ton of different monsters like skeletons, soldiers, and big ass knights. Golden Axe is a hard game. It’s very hard to be honest. You have to time your attacks perfectly in boss battles or you will get murdered. Each warrior has access to magical powers that they can call on once you collect enough mana potions. These powers can turn the tide of a battle but be careful how you use them because once you run out of magic you’ll have to collect more from these thieves that try to steal you equipment late at night.

I have very fond memories of Golden Axe. My brother and I used to play this all day long when we were kids. The last time I played this game was two years ago on my 360.

golden-axe_124006The gameplay of Golden Axe is simple. You go from one side of the screen to the next, usually from left to right, fighting wave after wave of enemies. Golden Axe is a hack n slash game. You can jump, kick, and throw enemies on top of each other. You can even run at them and tackle them, with the men, or do a flying kick, with Tyris. Once you lose all of your lives it’s game over. You don’t get to start back on a previous stage like you do nowadays. When I say game over I mean game over. You have to start the entire game over again and you’ll probably do that a few times before you actually beat Death Adder.

It was a huge accomplishment for my brother and I when we finally beat Death Adder in Golden Axe. I was 5 and he was 4 years old. That was actually 20 years ago now that I think about it.

Golden Axe is a true classic and I will always remember it as one of the best games of the 90’s.

Our Verdict: 9/10
