I spent the better part of yesterday playing through the entire Injustice game. I have never played this game before because when it came out I did not have a console so I had to wait, well… hope, that one day it would come to PC and to my surprise it did. PC needs more fighting games but it’s understandable why the majority of them go to consoles. Fighting games are meant to be played with a controller. The first I noticed when I loaded up the game was how badly it was optimized for PC. I was lagging at certain parts of the game and I never lag at anything that I play. Graphically, Injustice actually looks pretty bad. I didn’t notice it at first because before I started playing the story mode I did a few vs matches to learn how to play the game.
Once the cutscenes started that’s when noticed how bad all the character models looked. Luckily the surroundings all looked pretty good and the fact that you can knock someone to a completely different portion of the stage made up for the lack of graphics.
The story of Injustice takes place in an alternate world. Batman, joker, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and the rest of the Justice League are trying to stop Joker from detonating a nuke in Metropolis. Before Batman could stop him they were magically teleported to an alternate version of the city. This new Metropolis has already been blown up and rebuilt by Superman and he now rules the entire world. The death of his wife and unborn child drove him to do unspeakable thing. I thought the story for the most part was entertaining. Mostly because I really love the Justice League and it kind of felt like I was watching the tv show. I loved playing as Batman, Flash, and Wonder Woman. Green Lantern, Aquaman, and Superman are my favorites in this game though.
Some of the characters in the game have a new look and before a match starts you can change their appearance by pushing the Y button on your controller. The gameplay is pretty good. If you’ve played the latest Mortal Kombat game you’ll feel right at home here. The only difference being this is a game about Super Heroes so no one ever really dies except Shazam… poor guy. The gameplay is smooth but as I mentioned earlier there are lag spikes on the PC port of the game. When I would start moving at like 5 frames per second I would get annoyed and rage quit. Injustice is a lot of fun but it doesn’t really add anything new to the table and it doesn’t have as much content as Mortal Kombat.
Fatalities have been replaced by an ultimate attack. Superman’s ultimate attack knocks you into orbit. Moments later he flies above, the unlucky person, and knocks them back down to earth. Every ultimate attack that I’ve seen so far looks pretty great. It’s easy to get a good combo going on if you know what you’re doing. You can easily knock someone up in the air and not let them hit the floor. Superman’s attacks are seriously op in this game but you would kind of expect that because he’s Superman.
While you’re fighting the world around you will gradually take damage. You can even ride a motorcycle on someone’s face or pick up a an item from the stage itself and throw it an your opponent. After you beat the story mode you can test your skills in battle mode. Battle mode has a number of challenges available for you to try to beat to unlock new content. Other than battle mode Injustice has multiplayer but there aren’t a lot of modes from you to choose from. There’s your standard one on one fight and two other modes.
During the story I noticed that some characters, like hawkgirl, weren’t even playable. All we got to do was beat her up and that’s too bad considering how much I like Hawk Girl. Injustice is a great game. The fighting mechanics are solid and if you love DC than you’ll be playing this game for a really long time. The story mode is a added bonus because fighting games usually skip adding in stories to their games. However, there isn’t a lot to do other than fight each other after you’ve completed the main story of the game. This would be fine if Injustice had more than just a few modes to choose from. The graphics are terrible and the lag spikes really got on my nerves while I playing. Injustice: Gods Among Us won’t revolution the fighting genre but it’s still a game that should be experienced if you’re a DC fan.
Our Verdict: 8/10
