I, Frankenstein Review

I remember when I first saw the trailer to this movie. I bashed the crap out of it because of the way they portrayed Frankenstein in this movie. We haven’t had a good Frankenstein movie in over 20 years so when I saw this I was disappointed. I stand by my initial reaction to this film because even after watching it I still the feel the same way. I Frankenstein is not a bad movie though. If you can make it through the beginning of the movie you’ll find some enjoyable action sequences that happen later on in the movie. Frankenstein kicks some ass in this film, but it just felt so out of place. Frankenstein doesn’t use blunt weapons nor does he run across rooftops fighting demons. It just felt weird the entire time I was watching, but in the end I ended up liking this movie because it was different.

We all know Frankenstein’s story so there’s no point in me writing about it. The beginning of this movie is terrible. I almost stopped watching it because of how cheesy it was. The acting the for most part is alright, but this isn’t a triple A action movie. It’s more like a B- action movie. The visual effects were alright. They’re weren’t bad, but they didn’t blow me away either. Frankenstein himself is played by Aaron Eckhart. Aaron did a good job at portraying Frankenstein and you couldn’t help, but feel sorry for the guy some times. No one in the world is like him and everyone wants to use him to achieve their own goals.

i-frankenstein-hi-resAaron Eckhart is the only reason why I liked this film. Everyone else in the movie was disappointing. They just can’t act and it really showed in some scenes. The movie was all over the place and it seems like no one really knew how they wanted this film to play out. Is Frankenstein good? Is he bad? Are the gargoyles his friend? Or are they simply using him to kill the demons? Another thing that bothered me was the blond chick in the movie. What was the point of her even having that much screen time? The movie would have went on just fine without her in it. They could’ve added anyone to play her and it wouldn’t make a difference. She was just thrown in there to give Frankenstein a love interest I guess.

I mentioned earlier that this movie had some decent fight scenes in it. That’s true for the most part, but for every good fight scene there is also a bad one to accompany it. The final fight was very disappointing. My favorite fight in the entire movie was probably when the demons invaded the gargoyles to kidnap Frankenstein. That part was awesome and I loved how everyone just transformed into the gargoyles. I also love how they go back to heaven when they die.

I, Frankenstein is a unique spin on an old tale. I personally would have preferred a remake of the classic 1931 Frankenstein Boris Karloff made an instant classic. I, Frankenstein is a grade B action movie that shouldn’t exist, but is good or a single sitting. There is nothing revolutionary here and I don’t think anyone will walk away saying, “Aaron Eckhart is the best Frankenstein ever.”

  1. Yeah. That’s pretty much what I’ve heard about this. It’s a shame because I do like Eckhart and the trailer looked kind of cool…Ah well. Lol. Win some, lose some. Nice review!

    1. Thanks. I love Eckhart too and that’s what made it so bad for me. He was the only redeemable factor in this movie. You’re not missing out on much though in my honest opinion :].
