Tetris Attack – Classic Review

I have very fond memories of playing Tetris Attack on the Super Nintendo. When I booted up the game I was greeted by Yoshi shouting, “Nintendo!” and that instantly got me excited to play on of the best puzzle games ever made for any console.

Tetris Attack is a simple game. You match any three blocks to together of the same color to make them disappear so your blocks won’t reach the top of the column that you’re playing in. Once they reach the top it’s game over.

downloadTo make things interesting if you match four or more blocks together you can do a special attack on whoever you’re fighting and it’ll drop a giant sized block on them. The more combos you can chain together the bigger the block will be that falls on them. You can literally have it covering their entire screen if you’re really good.

Tetris Attack does take skill to master. Especially on the hardest difficulty setting because your opponent will constantly be performing combos to take you out. If you’ve ever played Pokemon Puzzle League than you’ll know what I’m talking about here since that game is a complete rip of this one.

Both of them are fun, but Tetris Attack is just a little better in my opinion. For a Super Nintendo game, Tetris Attack looks pretty good. And it’s aged very well. I can still jump on play despite the fact that it came out in 1995.

You’ll get to play as what I would like to call the other guys in the Nintendo universe. We’re used to playing as Mario, Luigi and the rest of the crew. Not Lakitu, Poochy, and Froggy.

The soundtrack in this game is amazing. Especially Froggy’s and Lakitu’s theme songs.

There are a variety of different game modes to play through. There’s your standard story mode that has Yoshi trying to free all of his friends from Bowser’s dark spell. There’s arcade mode, time attack, endurance, endless, and puzzle mode. Each mode has different requirements for you to past them and they’re all well done.

Tetris Attack has truly stood the test of time. Not many games from back in the 90’s are as good today as they were when they first released. This is a true gem and it’s a game that I would still recommend to anyone.

Our Verdict: 8/10

  1. Had great great times with this game, playing with my brother growing up. He was always better, but the system works nicely for counterattacks and balances it in a way that always gave me a slight chance and home. Fond memories.
