Black Gold just went into open beta a few hours ago and I was surprised to see how many people jumped in and played the game. Both of the servers were completely full. I was lucky enough to get in the game before the crowd logged in.
As far as day one releases go Black Gold is a miss, but only slightly so. Every action that you perform has a little lag to it and I know it’s not my rig. I eventually got fed up with clicking a button to attack and watching the animation play it three to four seconds later. The quest are all painfully average, but they tried to cover it up by adding “cinematic” cutscenes between them.
That would be good if there was some voice acting in the game, but there isn’t. It was very awkward watching some “epic” cutscene when the person talking had no voice. I expect modern MMOs to have some form of voiced dialogue in their games. We have come to far to not have them and there are MMO’s out there that does it very well.
The combat in Black Gold looks like a lot of fun, but sadly I had a horrible time actually playing the game because of the lag that plagued my every action.
The character creator is great. It took me thirty minutes to create my first character. You can scale just about every part of the human body in the character creator and the results came out beautifully. You can even create heavy set characters and that’s something you don’t see in most games that have a character creator.
Black Gold only slightly misses being a hit. If the devs can take away the lag that happens while I’m fighting enemies and possibly add some decent voice acting to some of the npcs than I could see myself giving this game a recommendation, but in it’s current state I would say there are better MMO’s out there that are worth your time.
