Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 1 Review

One of the many cartoons that I grew watching was Sailor Moon. I’m actually a big fan of the series. I know how girly it is, but I loved it as a child.

I usually hate reboots so I was a bit skeptical about watching this one, but it turned out to be a pretty good opening episode and I want to see what happens next.

Sailor Moon starts off with our main protagonist, Usagi, rushing out of her home to make it to school on time.  On the way their she meets a cat trying to get a band-aid off of it’s head. After she helps the cat again she meets it again later on in the show and learns that she is the chosen to save the city from evil.

Nothing really exciting happened in this episode, but that’s to be expected with the very first episode of this reboot. Some main characters were introduced in this first episode though. Besides Sailor Moon herself we got to see Luna, the black cat, Tuxedo Mask, and Ami Mizuno, also known as Sailor Mercury.

sailor_moon_crystal_by_naschi-d7b62sbI’m actually pretty excited to see what will happen in the next episode. I love the new art style in the game. You can tell technology has come a long way since the 90’s. Sailor Moon has never looked better, but I do think that the original first episode of this series was better than the new one.

Sailor Moon Crystal’s first episode was funny, had nice action, and most importantly was fun to watch. The only real negative thing I can say about the first episode is the subtitles were too hard to read because everything was so bright in the show.

I can understand Japanese just fine, but my wife can’t and I had to constantly translate what was going on because she couldn’t read the subtitles without straining her eyes. The subtitles are really white on a really white sidewalk. Imagine how hard it would be to see that if it happened constantly.

What I would like to see in the future for this new series is more character development for all of the characters. We already know who they are so I don’t think they should waste too much time getting the gang back together. I do think that having some deep character building with all of the characters would make this a really great show.

Sailor Moon Crystal didn’t impress me as much as the original cartoon did back in the 90’s, but I am curious to see what will happen in the future for this new Sailor Moon series.

Our Verdict: 7/10

    1. Thanks. I’m planning on reviewing every episode I watch. I’m very curious to see if they follow the same path as the cartoon did or if they’re going to go their own route with this new installment.

    1. So far… yes. I was worried about that at first too since I have three kids. There is no nudity or anything like that going on so it’s safe :].

I would recommend watching the future episodes by yourself before you let you kids watch it though just to be on the safe side.

  1. One of the things that my wife pointed out to me about the new show is that it is actually sticking much closer to the manga, more than the original show. She and I have agreed that Monday nights are now Sailor Moon nights for as long as the show is broadcast.

    1. I’m not sure if I’m going to watch every episode. I actually prefer the original. I’m not a fan of mangas :].

So far the show is good though. I can’t wait for episode 2.
