Champions of Norrath was probably my favorite game of 2004. It’s definitely in the top 3 and it is one of my all time favorite PS2 games.
In Champions of Norrath you get to choose from a variety of races before you start your adventure. There is very little character customization, but you can choose things like new character hairs, skin color, and you get to choose your starting ability for your chosen character.
My favorite character has always been the dark elf. I love how they mix magic with close up combat. You can summon skeletons, and raise fallen foes around you to help you out in combat. Your goal in Champions of Norrath is to save the world.
Your quest will take you to various different locations. You can fight monsters, level up, and collect a lot of sweet loot along the way. Champions of Norrath is one of the many games that had local co op back in the day. You can just sit down with your friends and play together for hours.
There is no shared loot in Champions of Norrath. Everyone will have to share the loot with each other as they find it. If you found a good bow, but you’re not specializing in bows than give it to one of your partners that does use a bow. It’s the same way with staffs, swords, greatswords, and armor. Don’t be greedy and everyone will have fun.
The world of Champions of Norrath is beautiful. This game has aged very well. The gameplay is still a lot of fun and I have yet to see another game like this that allows me to go from playing as a dark elf to a barbarian. There is a good variety of spells for all of the magic oriented characters and there are a ton of skills available for warriors, and archers too.
You can dual wield weapons once you get the required skill, be better with certain types of armor, and even be able to shoot enemies faster with a bow. If you’re low on supplies you can go shopping for some potions, arrows, new weapons, and even armor. Honestly I never buy new weapons and armor because I always ended up finding something better five minutes later.
The gold you acquire would best be used for buying health potions, and arrows. During you quest you will come across side quest that you can complete to earn valuable rewards. Some quest will even reward you with rare items if you’re patient enough to complete them.
There is a lot of content in this game. Many games has tried to capture the magic that Champions of Norrath did for so many gamers years ago, but none of them has succeeded or even came close to being as good as this game is.
Our Verdict: 8/10
