Captain America: The Winter Soldier Review

I finally sat down and watched the second Captain America movie. It definitely had it’s high points, but it was also pretty boring too.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier picks up where the Avenger movie left off. Captain America is working with Shield. One of my favorite parts of this whole movie was the very beginning of it. I loved watching Cap fall from midair without a parachute.

He’s a super soldier and he shouldn’t need one. The fight on the ship was amazing. Cap was just rushing up behind people and knocking them out.

Honestly I feel as if this film was a step down from the first one.  I really didn’t like Nick Fury in this film. I thought he was just there because Samuel L. Jackson played him. The Black Widow was alright, but none of her scenes really stuck out to me. I thought the movie would have been just fine without her in it.

I really don’t like the storyline this time around. The first movie had a great story. We saw Steve Rodgers become Captain America and most importantly he acted like Captain America would. He jumped on a grenade for a one of his comrades. It didn’t explode, but it was impressive nonetheless.

More than half of this film was just about Steve trying to clear his name. That would have been cool if we would have saw him dress up as Captain America, but we didn’t. Instead we just got Steve Rodgers traveling from one boring location to the next with the Black Widow.

The Winter Soldier had to be the most disappointing thing about the entire movie. All I wanted to see was The Winter Soldier go up against Captain America and when it happened it was disappointing. The Winter Soldier is just some guy they needed to go toe to toe against Cap so he wouldn’t completely murder everyone like he did in the first movie.

downloadThe acting in this movie is obviously great. Everyone did a great job at portraying these iconic superheroes, but the story itself brings the movie down for me. I just didn’t like it. It was too much Steve and not enough Cap and in the end I walked away a little disappointed. What I did see of Cap I loved.

I loved The Falcon too. It was badass seeing him fly around the battlefield dodging missiles and I’m glad he wasn’t just some side character that no one cared about. He was an actual main character in the movie with a backstory and his own demons to fight.

The Falcon is a far cry from what he was in the comics, but I think they handled him well enough to be liked even by hardcore Falcon fans. The main villain in the movie didn’t surprise me at all. I’ve seen a ton of Robert Redford movies and I knew once I saw him that he was the bad guy.

Chris Evans played Captain America really well, but just about everything else that happened in this film was questionable. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is a solid movie and definitely worth watching once, but I can’t say that I’ll stick around for the third movie in the series.

Marvel Movies are getting worse and worse. It started with The Avengers and it’s continuing into all of the standalone superhero films.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier is disappointing, but it can’t touch the first movie and it misses out on earning our recommendation.

Our Verdict: 6/10

  1. It sometimes get too convoluted for its own good, but most of the time, it’s entertaining. Just like every other Marvel movie practically is. Good review.
