Everyone that’s read my articles on The Elder Scrolls Online knows how much I hated it. The beta was boring, the animations were sloppy, and the quest were all average.
I don’t know why I decided I decided to give this a game another chance, but I figured since I could play Final Fantasy 14 A Realm Reborn and have some fun with it than I could try out The Elder Scrolls Online once again to see if anything has changed.
The first thing I noticed was that if you’ve already completed the tutorial you have the option to skip it. This is great because you don’t have to go through that long ass dungeon anymore. If you choose to do this you’ll start off at level 3 with the equipment that you would have found in the tutorial.
I decided to give the Daggerfall Covenant a try and honestly it’s not bad. Every quest that I’ve done so far is really good. They actually feel like Elder Scrolls quest that you would find in Skyrim or Morrowind. Some of the old classic enemies from Morrowind are back. I fought my first Nix Hound last night. I almost died, but it nice to see Morrowind get a facelift.
No city that I’ve seen so far has made me feel the way I felt when I saw Daggerfall again. We haven’t stepped foot in Daggerfall in a really long time and being able to explore it again is a real treat.
I had a chance to foil an assassination plot on the king of Daggerfall, investigate some murders, and go hunting harpies with a bunch of guys that has a dream to form their own guild. The only downside to this is the fact that you can’t immerse yourself in this game. If I’m sneaking around a cave someone would rush right pass me and kill the guy I’m trying to assassinate.
It takes me out the game and I really wish that Zenimax would do what Star Wars The Old Republic did and add instances in the game.
It’s also a pain in the ass running everywhere. It got so bad that I just decided to create an Imperial and use the special horse that comes with him. After I got my horse things got a lot better. I got to my quest quickly and I even met some other players along the way. We decided to team up and do a quest that was a few levels ahead of us.
I think the biggest problem with The Elder Scrolls Online is the thing that The Elder Scrolls is famous for and that’s exploration. You can’t explore because if you go to far than you’ll end up fighting enemies a few levels ahead of you. There is nothing out there to find. If you’re not doing a quest there is little to no reason for you to actually want to explore.
The game is beautiful in certain areas, but it feels empty when you’re out in the wilderness exploring because you won’t find anything.
As a MMO this game is alright. It’s not terrible, but as an Elder Scrolls game this game fails to do just about everything that we’ve grown to love about the series. There is no exploration, you still can’t swim underwater, and there little to no point in trying to loot treasure chest because another player will most likely beat you to it. There is a lot of loot in the game. You can easily find new armor and weapons on enemies, but it’s still a negative because in every Elder Scrolls game you could just take everything that an npc has on them.
You can’t break the law because there is no law, you can’t run inside a random npc’s house, murder them, and wait for the dark brotherhood to find you because you can’t murder npcs, you can’t go to jail, and you can’t build you character the way you want because you’re forced to choose a class at the beginning of the game. The Elder Scrolls has always been about freedom, but there is a real lack of that here.
On the other hand The Elder Scrolls Online has some pretty good quest. The combat has really improved since the beta and it’s not that bad. It’s not Skyrim good, but it’s not Morrowind bad either. The entire game is voice acted and everyone sounds pretty good. The armor sets look nice, but I think they looked better in just about every other Elder Scrolls game.
When you compare what’s missing from this game to what we got it should come as no surprise why most Elder Scrolls fans bash this game so bad. What we got is literally the bare boned minimum of what’s expected to be in an Elder Scrolls game.
As an MMO it’s enjoyable, but I’m still at the beginning of the game. I’m going to play through this entire game to see if it gets any better. It’s not bad right now, but it’s also not worth $15 a month.
