Odd Thomas is a odd movie. I was bored the other day and decided to waste my entire day watching Netflix. I love supernatural movies so I was immediately intrigued when I came across Odd Thomas. In a way this film is very lighthearted. There is little to no blood even though people end up dying and getting shot by an assault rifle later on in the film, but I actually like the fact that’s not in your face kind of gore because I could watch this film with my kids. There is also a comedic vibe which lightens up the mood of the movie because you’ll most likely laugh at a lot of the stuff that happens throughout the film.
Odd Thomas can see dead people and he tries to help them crossover by helping them take care of their unfinished business. Usually it’s by catching the person that killed the ghost.
In many ways Odd Thomas feels like the canon episode of a tv series. Well… it did at first anyway, but as the movie progresses it felt more like a season than just one episode.
Something really evil is going to happen and the only person that can stop it is Thomas. Usually in films like this the main protagonist has to convince people that he can see spirits and it’ll take the rest of the cast the entire movie to believe the person making the claim. I’m glad to say that did not happen in here. Everyone in Thomas’s life knows about his gift. Thomas has a relationship with the head of the police in the movie, which is actually played by William Dafoe.
I loved William Dafoe in this film. He’s awesome in everything that he does. I also liked Anton Yelchin. I’ve never actually considered him a actor worth paying any attention to, but I might check out a few more of his films because I really liked him in this one.
I felt like any female could have played his girlfriend so I can’t really give Addison Timlin credit. Honestly she doesn’t have a major part in the film. Most of time we’re just watching Thomas try and solve this case and most of the dialogue is mostly explaining the situation to us from Odd Thomas’s perspective.
I like the twist that happened near the end of the film. It was a nice change of pace. I did notice some spoofs in the film. Usually I try not to, but one of them was so obvious I couldn’t help but laugh. When Thomas got shot in the side there was blood everywhere, but in the very next scene his shirt was clean again like nothing had ever happened.
Odd Thomas doesn’t really feel like a movie. I thought I was watching the first episode of a season and that’s not really a bad thing. I wouldn’t mind going to see a sequel if one is ever made. I would even pay to see it at the theaters.
Our Verdict: 7/10
