Archeage First Impression

I finally got a chance to sit down and play Archeage. I have been trying for over a week to get into this game. Every time I tried I would be placed in a queue with an insane waiting time. This morning was different. There was actually a server that wasn’t full of players.Archeage is a pretty awesome MMO. You can craft, build, sail, and fight your way to glory in this game. I was a little disappointed in the character creator because you can only customize your face. You can’t do your arms, legs, chest, or thighs in this game. I expect all modern MMO’s to have extensive character creators and Archeage didn’t, but it’s honestly only a minor gripe that I have with the game.

Everything else blew me away. As soon as I started the game I could tell how much love was put into everything. Archeage is a beautiful game. It’s not the best looking MMO, but it’s far from being an ugly game. Everything in this game looks great. There is even particle effects in the water when you swim. Most MMO’s don’t even bother to do that.

archeage-x16The gameplay is mix of action and point and click. Guild Wars 2 has a similar combat system, but you have more control of your character in Guild Wars 2 than you do in Archeage. That’s not taking anything away from Archeage though. The combat system is really good and as you earn skill points you can use them to unlock new skills.

So far I’ve learned two different specializations. I want to focus on dps with spells and up close so I got specializations that lets me do that.

In my brief time spent in Archeage I’ve raised a pet to maturity so I can ride him around the world, got thrown off a cliff by assassins, helped build a house, shot a piece of dragon fruit in the sky, and forced a poor Zebra to give me it’s milk.

There is a lot you can do in this game. Archeage doesn’t feel like your average MMO. There is obviously typical MMO quest present in the game, but it doesn’t shower you in them. This game is so fun to play that I doubt I would hate it even if it did just have fetch quest and kill quest.

ArcheAge-newInstead I was treated to a story driven main quest that hasn’t let up yet. My character is having visions of an assassin’s life and I’m trying to figure out what’s going on while kicking some ass in my spare time.

There are some things that I don’t like about the game. The thing I hate the most is the way you have to kill enemies and bosses. Whoever hits the enemy first gets credit for it. The problem with that is there are too many people trying to do same thing. I wish it was more like Guild Wars 2 because it doesn’t matter who hits a boss or enemy first. Everyone would get credit for it. I was lucky enough to kill the boss before too many people flocked over to my area and started to kill everything in sight.

Another thing that I don’t like is the fact that other characters can actually interrupt your conversations by ramming into you while you’re talking. You would have to start the entire conversation over again and that’s really annoying.

So far Archeage is living up to my expectations. I waited years to get my hands on this game and now that I actually played it I’m really excited to see how everything plays out. Hopefully I can get back in the game later today, but I doubt it. Trion really needs to increase the size of the servers or just make some new ones because the wait time to enter the game is crazy right now. I refuse to wait an hour or two to play a game. I’m busy man with three kids and I can’t afford to do that.

Other than those minor problems this is looking like the best MMO that I’ve played this year by far.

    1. I’m no near ready to give this game a review. I don’t even have three hours in it. This is just my impression of the game so far, but I would recommend you wait before jumping in because you won’t really get a chance to get into the game because of how populated it is right now. You’ll be randomly kicked out because of how full the servers are.

      1. Ah, sorry. Wrong terminology, or just lazy typing. I do appreciate your impression. I may save the installation for the end of the month, depending on how much data I have left over for downloads…or hell, next month. I am in no hurry.

      2. I tend to use up a lot of data on my PC too. I have too many games installed now. Archeage isn’t a really big game though. It’s no near the size of ESO or Titanfall anyway.

I’m glad my impression helped. Thanks for reading.
