The Evil Within is a confusing game. It jumps from one point to another without really explaining why. I’m currently in chapter 3 and I still have no idea what’s going on. It’s just one random encounter after another and I honestly don’t care much for the main protagonist right now.
I honestly don’t care about any of the characters that were introduced in the story. This game is very predictable. I know exactly when a jump scare is going to happen and I’m pretty sure I know who the main villain of the game is already. The only thing The Evil Within has going for it right now is it’s atmosphere. This game looks really good. I like the way the light shines in the darkness and I love the creepiness of the surroundings.
I’ve noticed more than a few muddy textures and in this day and age that’s simply unacceptable. The gameplay is where this game falls flat on it’s face. The PC port is horrible. I had to use my Xbox One controller just to make things a little easier, but it honestly didn’t help much. The camera is too close to your character and it makes it hard to see what’s going on. Sneaking is also difficult because of this.
The film grain is another thing that I didn’t like. I’m glad there was an option to turn it off because it just made everything look worse. The enemy in this game can be compared to the enemy in Resident Evil. They’re just mindless zombies. Aiming is alright, but it could use some tweaking. The camera is horrible and it gets in the way a lot while I’m trying to sneak around a enemy or collect some much needed ammo.
The Evil Within has done nothing to really grasp me and suck me into it’s world. I’m hoping that’ll change as I continue playing, but I’m not so sure that I want to after all the crap I’ve had to endure so far.
