I don’t know about you, but I’ve never played a good Star Trek game in my life. We have plenty of really great Star Wars games, but no Star Trek. Star Trek Online changed all of that in just a few short hours.
Star Trek Online has everything that you would expect a Star Trek game to have. Good voice acting, great quest, customization, a good character creator, ship customization, and most importantly space exploration and combat. I think 75% of my time was actually spent in space.
The gameplay in space is great. Controlling my ship is easy, and firing your weapons is as simple as pushing the space bar, or the number keys. The W button goes down while the S button goes up. You can switch between speed, power, or defense with the press of a button. If you need to get somewhere fast than you’ll go with speed, but if you’re surrounded by enemies it would be best to go with defense.
Space combat is tactical and I had a lot of fun commanding my own crew.
Ground combat is also fun. It reminds me of Star Wars Knights of The Old Republic. You can choose to play the game in a more traditional PC way or like a third person shooter. Both ways work just fine, I preferred the RPG way.
In every ground mission you’ll be able to take some of your crew with you. On really big missions you have up to four other npc characters with you. I like how this game makes me feel like a leader. I can lead my own crew, upgrade my ship or just buy a new one when I have enough money.
So far I’m really loving Star Trek Online. I haven’t touched most of the features in this yet. I really want to get into some pvp, but I’ll need a better ship first. Most players that I’ve seen are really far ahead of me. For a five year old MMO this game is awesome and I would recommend it to any Star Trek fan.
