Does Anyone Care About Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice?

Sonic has really gone downhill lately. Just when I thought Sonic could make a comeback after Sonic Generations we got nothing, but subpar Sonic games and Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice is continuing the trend of bad Sonic games.

The first Sonic Boom game flopped faster than Alien Colonial Marines. The two Sonic Boom games sold 490,000 copies combined between the Wii U, and 3DS. I don’t have a problem with Sonic’s new look, but the games were boring, and glitchy from start to finish.

Someone at Sega thought it would be a good idea to release another Sonic Boom game after the major flop of the last one. Sonic Boom, sales wise, is the worst Sonic game in existence. Sonic Lost World sold more with 710,000 copies. If Sonic Boom was playable it probably would have did okay in the long run, but it’s not. Sega hasn’t known what to do with Sonic in a really long time.

The last great Sonic game was Sonic Generations. It mixed old Sonic with new Sonic and gave us the best Sonic game we’ve had in a really long time. Instead of building on the success of Sonic Generations Sega gave us subpar Sonic games.

AmyIf Sega wants Sonic Boom to succeed it’s going to have to perform flawlessly.  It’s going to need interesting level designs, and take a page out of Mario’s playbook. There’s a reason why Mario games are still successful today. It’s because Mario knows how to innovate itself each and every year while Sonic on the other hand doesn’t know what it wants to be.

I’m most likely going to skip Sonic Boom. It depends on what’s other games are coming out around it. I’ve been disappointed by Sonic too many times already to care about another failure in the making. Sonic is on the edge of the abyss right now and if this game fails it’s going to fall right into it.

  1. Sonic has managed to sell despite appearing in sub par games for many years. Perhaps fans have finally had enough or maybe they just hate the new look. Changing a character design can backfire (just ask DMC.)

    1. You’re right. Sonic sells well because every Sonic, like myself, is dumb enough to go out and buy every Sonic game, but recent Sonic games show that we’re tired of seeing our favorite Hedgehog be milked to death. I wish Sega would take a page out of Nintendo’s playbook and innovate Sonic the way Nintendo does with Mario.

As far as DMC goes I liked it.

      1. From what I hear DMC is good, but it didn’t sell great as long time fans refused to accept the new Dante.

I loved the classic Sonic games and even the ones on the Gamecube. My love for the character began to wane after I played Sonic 2006. I couldn’t believe Sega would release something so broken.

      2. I think Sonic Generations brought some life back to Sonic.

DMC was a really good game. I was never a fan of the old DMC games. I prefer the western storytelling that was given to us in the new one.
