Sword Coast Legends First Impression

I put this game on the back burner because of my October scare fest last month, but since Fallout 4 is taking so long to get here I decided to play Sword Coast Legends and it’s actually pretty good.

Sword Coast Legends is a cRPG, Pillars of Eternity/Divinity Original Sin, set in the Dungeons and Dragons world. I’ve played about 4 hours of it so far and I really like what I’ve experienced so far. The story is interesting enough to keep me coming back for more even though the characters are mostly hit or miss. I’m literally still at the beginning of the game right now though and I expect that to change over time.

The gameplay is what you would expect from a cRPG. You have an overhead view of what’s going on and you get to control a party of four characters. The great thing about this game is the fact that it has multiplayer. We can play through the game with our friends, sort of like Original Sin just without the combat, and experience everything together. I haven’t tried multiplayer out yet, but I’ve seen some friends play it and I can’t wait to test it out later.

SCL_6ssThe story started off pretty strong in my opinion. I woke up in a strange place being attacked by enemies and I had to fight them off. The cool thing was that it was just a dream, but everyone in my camp had the exact same dream and we don’t know why that is. To avoid giving out any spoilers I’ll stop there, but I’m completely immersed in the story right now and I can’t wait to see what happens next.

A lot of people are comparing this game to Pillars of Eternity and rightfully so since they’re so similar. The main difference is that Sword Coast Legends has multiplayer and a map creator and Pillars of Eternity doesn’t.

I do think Pillars of Eternity has a better story, but I am only at the beginning of the game right now.

Graphically, Sword Coast Legends looks pretty good. It won’t wow anyone or win any awards, but it gets the job done. The animations are pretty bad though, but it does have a really good character creator and for a cRPG that’s a major plus for me.

I’m having a lot of fun with Sword Coast Legends right now and it’s keeping me busy until Fallout 4 releases in a few days. Hopefully I’ll have a review up by then.
