Star Wars Battlefront Thoughts

There was no end to the hype when Star Wars Battlefront was revealed. Star Wars fans everywhere were praising the sun and hoping for a kick ass experience… so what happened?

I played the beta for a few hours and even considered purchasing the full game at one point because I did enjoy it, but one thing kept me from doing that, well… maybe two things, and it’s simply because the game felt just like Battlefield. Can Dice make a FPS game that doesn’t feel like Battlefield?

The answer is no. Star Wars Battlefront is nothing, but Battlefield with a Star Wars skin. That doesn’t mean that the game isn’t fun to play because it is, but it doesn’t have enough content to make people buy the game over games like Fallout 4, and Call of Duty Black Ops 3. If Black Ops 3 has more content then a Star Wars game something is really wrong in my opinion.

I’m surprised that Battlefront hasn’t done better. I was sure that this month would have been split between Battlefront, and Fallout 4. I guess I underestimated the Call of Duty fanbase and overestimated the Star Wars fanbase.

The fact is that EA and Dice killed a lot of momentum leading up to the release of Star Wars Battlefront. They announced a $50 season pass. I can buy Just Cause 3 for $35, and still have enough money left over for something else. I might use the extra $15 to buy my wife that Fantasy Life expansion she’s been craving for the last few months and that’ll still leave me with $5.

A $50 season pass is simply too much money for extra map packs and weapons that should have been in the game to begin with. I could understand if it was story related expansions, but it’s not because this game doesn’t have one. It’s a multiplayer only game and in order for it to stay relevant in the future everyone that plays it is going to need the season pass or they won’t be able to play with their friends that do have it.

ogimage.imgStar Wars Battlefront isn’t flying off the shelves like everyone thought it would be. Maybe that’s because a good majority of us are broke this month because of games like Fallout 4, Call of Duty, and the very small minority that brought Tomb Raider. Lets not forget Pokemon, and Yo Kai Watch too.

When I first learned that Dice was making this game I was worried because I’m not a Battlefield fan, you can read my Battlefield 3 review here. I didn’t bother to review part 4, and I had some doubts about their ability to make a true Star Wars game. It seems like I was right to worry about them because what we got here isn’t what we waited all these years for. It’s the bare minimum and adding $50 worth of DLC is a big deal because I don’t like buying map packs and I refuse to start doing that now.

Battlefront is a fun game that I haven’t committed to yet because of all of the similarities that it has to Battlefield and because of the lack of content that it has on day one of release. I shouldn’t have to wait for DLC to make a game better. It should be able to hold up on day one. The game itself isn’t bad though. It’s a lot of fun, but it’s hard to recommend for a full $60. There are many other games that have recently released that’s worth the money and I would recommend you look at those before you consider buying this.
