Top 12 Games Of The Last Generation

I’ve been working on this list for a really long time. What are the best games from the last generation of consoles?

Before I start let it be known that this is an opinion piece. If you don’t like the list feel free to leave your own list of games down in the comment section.

This list will include the Nintendo Wii, Xbox 360, and Playstation 3. Making this list was really hard, but I think the twelve finalist that I chose are all really great games and deserved to be on my list.

12. New Super Mario Bros.

Mario has been around for a really long time and it’s success can’t be denied. Super Mario Bros for the Wii gave us a whole new way to play Mario. It was fun and is one of the best platformers I’ve ever played. Being able to play with my family without taking turns is a big reason why it’s on my list.

11. Red Dead Redemption

The best western game ever made had to be placed on my list. It’s still one of the best open world games I’ve had the pleasure of exploring and I can’t wait for the sequel to be released one day.

10.Castlevania Lords of Shadow

One of the best games in Castlevania history is the first Castlevania Lords of Shadow. This game told a great story and was backed up by some fantastic gameplay. I know hardcore Castlevania fans that refuse to catch up with modern gaming would disagree, but I recommend all action game fans that like games like God of War to give this game a shot. You’ll love it.

9. Zelda Skyward Sword

The best game on the Wii is undoubtedly Zelda Skyward Sword. Everything from the gameplay to the story captivated me from the very beginning and I found myself playing this game from sunrise to sunset back in the day. This game really showcased what the Wii could do and I highly recommend it to everyone that’s ever owned a Wii.

8. Fallout 3

Fallout 3 is one of those games that’ll remember playing through my entire life. Nuking Megaton alone is enough to justify putting this game in my top 10, but there are so many other interesting quests in the game it’ll take up to much space to name them all. The gameplay is the only thing lacking in this gem of a game, but I had so much fun using vats it was hardly an issue for me in my countless playthroughs of this game on my Xbox 360.

7. Alan Wake

Is it controversial to put this game above all the others? I don’t think so. Alan Wake is the best horror game I’ve ever played. It had fantastic gameplay, great graphics, and a fantastic story that was truly unique in gaming and we haven’t had a game like ever since. Here’s to hoping that we at least get a remake of this masterpiece.

6. Soul Series

Dark Souls 2 4

The reason why I caved and eventually brought a PS3 was because of Demon’s Souls. It was fantastic from start to finish and my experience from Dark Souls helped me through the game. The Soul series is known for it’s difficulty, but they also have some of the best level design in any game ever made. Especially the first Dark Souls game. Dying has never been so much fun and I would gladly go through the journey all over again.

5. Dragon Age Origins

Dragon Age

This is Bioware at their finest in the Dragon Age saga. No Dragon Age game to date has been more memorable then Dragon Age Origins. The gameplay even stood the test of time even though the animations are bad it’s still a lot of fun to play. The story that this game told is golden and is one of the best in gaming. This is one game that should be played by all RPG enthusiast.

4. Splinter Cell Blacklist

If there’s a genre I love more then RPGs it’s stealth. I love sneaking around in the shadows and taking out my prey in unique, and inventive ways. Splinter Cell Blacklist lets me play my way without punishing me when I go off script. If I want to kick the front door down and go in guns blazing I can and I won’t lose points for it and that’s one of the many reasons why I gave this game a perfect score and it just happens to be the last game I gave a perfect score to more then two years ago.

3. Bioshock 1/Infinite

The first and last Bioshock games are nothing short of masterpieces. They took me on an incredible journey and told fantastic stories while providing excellent gameplay that never once got dull. Bioshock Infinite is the latest, and last, game in this franchise and it most certainly went out with a big bang because it’s the best one in the trilogy.

2. Skyrim

Skyrim ENB Lake

Bethesda has done it again. Skyrim, while dumbed down from it’s predecessors, is the best in the franchise by far. You can do so many different things in this game that you could literally make a dozen characters and each of them would have a different story to tell because of massive amount of freedom that Skyrim gives the player. Add years of mod support on top of that you’ve got one of the best games ever made.

1 Mass Effect Trilogy

If you’ve been following me then you should already know that I think Mass Effect is the best piece of entertainment that’s ever been released in gaming. I think the Mass Effect trilogy are the best games ever made. No three games has told a connecting story like Mass Effect that makes every choice that we make mean something. Even though the trilogy ended on a weak note you can’t deny the journey that led to that point and all the amazing characters that we met along the way and it was an easy choice placing these games at the number 1 slot.

Honorable Mentions:

Donkey Kong Country Returns

Super Mario Galaxy 2

Fable 2

Borderlands 2

Max Payne 3

Alpha Protocol

Metroid Prime Trilogy

Everyone’s list will obviously be different then mine and I hope you share yours with me down in the comments.
