Top 10 FPS Games of All Time

I’ve been meaning to write this list for quite a while now and I decided to stop putting it off and write already. These are my top 10 first person shooters of all time.

We’ve been hard at work trying to figure out what our favorite FPS games of all time are. We took into account the age of some of the classic FPS games of yesteryear and ranked them on how well they’ve aged over the years when compared to better FPS games. This is our top 10 first person shooters of all time list.

10. Far Cry 3

July 9th, 2012 @ 04:56:41

Far Cry 3 changed the way everyone viewed the Far Cry franchise. It has a big open world, awesome gameplay, and a really good villain for us to go up against. We could have easily put Far Cry 4 here, but since it’s just Far Cry 3.5 so why not go with the better game?

9. Metro Series

Metro-Redux-Runs-at-1080p-and-60fps-on-PS4-900p-and-60fps-on-Xbox-One

Metro 2033 Redux is just as fun as the original Metro game. It’s one of the only real remakes that we’ve gotten in this new generation of games. We couldn’t choose one over the other so we cheated and added both of them. The post apocalyptic setting is done very well in these games and the horror elements adds to the tension that you feel while you travel around the creepy metro tunnels. The gameplay, soundtrack, and story are all awesome and we highly recommend checking them out if you haven’t already.

8. Metroid Prime

Metroid Prime was the first time we’ve ever got to play as Samus in a first person shooter and it was all kinds of awesome. The first one in the series is by far the best one and adding it on our list of all time best FPS games was a no brainer. Metroid Prime was one of the most unique games of it’s time and let us play as Samus in a whole new way.

7. Call of Duty Modern Warfare

Call-of-Duty-4-Modern-Warfare

Before Call of Duty milked itself into oblivion it was actually a really good franchise. Call of Duty 1-4 are really good games. You can even make the argument for World at War too. I must have spent countless hours playing my friends and family at Modern Warfare and the multiplayer on it was the best the series has ever had. Call of Duty Modern Warfare definitely deserves to be in every top 10 FPS list.

6. Crysis 3

crysis3-2013-01-22-10-57-22-06

What do you get when you add a bad ass soldier and give him a super alien suit that can destroy everything in it’s path? You get the Crysis series. I don’t remember the last time I had so much fun playing a FPS game like I did in Crysis. Kicking cars at my enemies, jumping into sky and hulk smashing them into tiny pieces, and sniping them with a badass bow was awesome. Don’t even get me started on how good the game looks. It’s still the best looking game I’ve ever played and it’s been years since it’s released.

5. The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay

The_Chronicles_Of_Riddick_-_Escape_From_Butcher_Bay

Who would have thought that a game with Vin Diesel in it would be one of the best FPS games ever made? Escape from Butcher Bay is a all around excellent game. Escape from Butcher Bay isn’t all about shooting. You actually go awhile before you can do any of that. At the beginning it’s about stealth and this game does that very well. Sticking my knife in a unsuspecting enemy was glorious and when I finally did get a chance to shoot someone it made the entire game worth it. This game is a classic.

4.  Bioshock Infinite

Bioshock Infinite has everything that I look for in a good FPS game. Great gameplay, sound effects, and a really great story too. The story that this game told is by far the best one on this list and it’s backed up by some really good gameplay. I don’t have to shoot my way out of every situation. There are multiple ways for me to dispatch my foes and I love that about this game. Add in one of the best stories that’s been told in recent years and you’ve got yourself one hell of a game.

3. Borderlands 2

Borderlands-2-gang

Do you like guns? How about one of the best villains in gaming history? If your answer if yes to both of those questions you’ll love Borderlands 2. Borderlands 2 is the best porn for gun nuts and is the best RPG/FPS hybrid ever made. It’s witty, has great gameplay, and a huge selection of guns for you to collect.

2. F.E.A.R 1&2

Gunplay-FEAR-2-2

The F.E.A.R series are the best controlling FPS games I’ve ever played. What I mean by that is everything just feels natural from basic movements down to the shooting itself. Everything works really, really well and it would be a crime to leave these games off of our list because F.E.A.R. plays better then every game on this list and that’s includes the number one spot.

F.E.A.R. mixed FPS with horror and end result is near perfect in both genres. If you’ve never played a F.E.A.R. you should. They’re all classics with the exception of part 3.

  1. Wolfenstein The New Order

This might come across as being a bit controversial when you consider the games we didn’t add to this. Where’s Half Life 2? What about Halo, and Left For Dead? Wolfenstein: The New Order did something very few FPS games could do and that’s successfully mix old school and new school FPS mechanics into one game. The end result is us running around with B.J. Blazkowicz dual wielding shotguns while killing everything in sight.

It’s backed by a good story, awesome voice acting, and non stop action. The New Order is a game that caters to both old school FPS fans and new school ones by allowing us to play both ways. Shooting Nazis in the face has never been better and I have no problem whatsoever calling this the best FPS game I’ve ever played.

Honorable Mentions:

Duke Nukem

Perfect Dark Zero

Quake II

Rainbow Six Vegas 2

Doom 3

Bioshock 1

I would like to thank Lunaliah for helping me make this list. I know my list looks pretty different from most top 10 FPS list that I’ve seen, but it’s just our opinion. Feel free to share your own list with us and let us know what you think of ours.

  1. I’m glad I’m not alone in thinking Bioshock Infinite was superior to the original. Bravo for adding Metroid Prime as well.

I actually didn’t care for Crysis 3, though I *loved* the original.

Great list overall. Mine would look similar, but I’d have Halo 1 or 2 in there somewhere.

    1. Bioshock is one of my all time favorite game franchises. I love part 1, and Infinite to death, but I’ll quickly choose Infinite as the better game because, imo, it did everything better then Bioshock which is to be expected because it’s the newest game in the series.

I’ll defend Crysis to death against anyone :]. I love that trilogy.

I’ve never been a huge Halo fan, but I’ll admit that I had a lot of fun playing Halo 2 when it first released. It just didn’t leave a lasting impression on me like the other games on my list did.

      Thanks for reading.

      1. I was wondering if you played dark soul 3 yet. I need some tip, do strong attacks have a place in the gameplay such as big enemies and bosses or should just use standard attacks. Also parrying with a counterattack seems kind of off.

  2. Theres a free to play modern version of Tribes out now called Tribes Vengeance (?) that is similar enough to the original weapons and movement (aka skiing) but some of the mods of the original were what helped make it special… it was almost like a class based sci-fi Battlefield game back in the day of 56K modems. 🙂

I was amazed with just how good Wolfenstein turned out to be but since the team is made up of some devs who also worked on Riddick i shouldnt have been surprised!

    1. I’ll definitely look Tribes Vengeance up. Thanks for bringing it up :].

The New Order was amazing and I don’t think it got enough love from critics because it was easily one of the best games that released in 2014.

I had no idea some of the devs that worked on Riddick also worked on The New Order. That would explain why I love it so much :]

  3. It’s a good list! There’s definitely a lot of different games that could go on there (like you said) but I think a lot of it boils down to what you’ve been exposed to over the years. In my own list I couldn’t leave out Halo or Starseige: Tribes. I REALLY liked seeing Riddick mentioned…. still nothing quite like it. 🙂

    1. This was a really hard list make. I really wanted to put Turok, and Doom on it, but I ran out of space and those two games have very poorly.

I’ve never been a big Halo fan. I’ve only played three games in the series so I don’t know much about it. Riddick was a really great game and I’ve never played the other games you mentioned :).
