Evolve Is Now Free To Play, But Is It Worth Playing?

This news about Evolve didn’t surprise me at all. I knew it would eventually go free to play and it’s still as unimpressive as it was when it was buy to play.

Evolve’s dying playerbase is why it went free to play. No one was playing it with games like Overwatch, and Battleborn out. Evolve tried to revolution multiplayer games by letting four players team up to take on another player that played as a big ass monster. The concept is a good one, but the developers killed this game by charging us up the ass for DLC.

There was way too much DLC in Evolve and thankfully players were smart enough not to buy into that business model. Evolve stage 2 has already had over 1 million PC players play the game, but word around the Internet is that a good majority of those players have already left the game.

Evolve is a boring game in my opinion and I have no reason to jump back in it. I’m glad it’s free to play because that’ll let new players try the game out to see if they like it, but it’s never going to have a very large playerbase. I think Evolve is a dying game and I’ll be surprised if it’s not shut down some time next year. I could be wrong, but no one is really excited about Evolve going free to play. I know I’m not excited about it.

Are you?

  1. I’ve actually found that the changes they’ve made have made for a more tense and pulse-pounding experience 🙂 I’ll admit, the first iteration of evolve was a disaster, but I think the new direction they’re taking has a lot of potential 🙂 Anyway, great article! I’ve followed your blog, feel free to check out mine any time 🙂

  2. Though I’m curious to see how the change affects the game, it might just be too late to save it. Like you said, there’s a lot of other games out there now so Evolve is not going to stand out too well.
