Lets Talk About Pokemon Uranium

So Pokemon Uranium has already been taken down by Nintendo. What else is new?

I’m not against Nintendo taking down a fan made Pokemon game. What people need to realize is they’re literally wasting their time with these games because there’s a good chance that Nintendo will take legal action have them removed and it’s their right to do it.

Spending 9 years to make a game is a lot of time to invest in something. So why would you invest so much time into something that doesn’t belong to you? Nintendo owns Pokemon and only they have the right to make those games. I’m not against playing fan made Pokemon games. Pokemon Flora Sky, and Pokemon Reborn are some of my favorite Pokemon games ever. I’m Uranium is a great game too, but you always run the risk of having your content removed when you release a game with the name “Pokemon” on it.

Changing the name of the game to something else entirely would have avoided this situation, but 1,500,000 people would not have downloaded the game if it wasn’t advertised as being a “new” Pokemon game. And since I saw Mankey in the game I guess that throws that idea down in the toilet.

Whether or not you like what Nintendo has done is irrelevant. It’s Nintendo’s right to do what they want to do with the Pokemon brand and that’s all there is to it.

  1. Nintendo definitely has the right to put an end to these passion projects, but I don’t think it was ever the intent for these folks (or the ones behind the recent Metroid 2 remake) to do anything more than develop Uranium as a labor of love and get it in the hands of as many people as possible. The damage is done either way, since you can still grab it through torrent sites, etc.

    1. You’re right. I actually managed to get my hands on a copy to try it out and it’s actually not bad.

I know the meant well with Uranium. I’ve played some incredible fan made Pokemon games over the years. It’s a shame that Uranium has been taken down, but as you said it’s Nintendo’s right to do so.

Maybe Nintendo will be like Bethesda and let people make games. The Skywind project is coming along nicely and Bethesda supports it.
