Pokemon Uranium Is Officially Shut Down

The developers of Pokemon Uranium have officially announced that they’ll no longer be working on the game.

Pokemon Uranium is a mixed bag for me. I enjoyed my 48 hours I spent in the game, but ultimately left unimpressed with it. It’s admirable that these developers spent 9 years on this game, but, keep in mind this is my opinion, it’s also incredibly stupid. Why spend 9 years on a game that you don’t own the license for?

Pokemon Uranium had some of the worst fake Pokemon I’ve ever seen in any fan game that I’ve played and story that made absolutely no sense at all. The gameplay is really good, and I love the fact that they gave some underappreciated Pokemon evolved forms, but the overall quality of the game is poor when compared to other fan games out there as well as official Nintendo made products.

Uranium is a buggy mess of a game. It performs poorly on the most powerful rigs out there and some times it’s a slideslow. It’s constantly lagging and doesn’t even have a end game. I hope whatever the developers do next is successful. Lets hope it’s actually a project they can make money from.

Am I being too harsh? I don’t think so. They knew the risk they were taking by making a Pokemon game and the fact that they have a Patreon for the game means they made some cash on it which is illegal. Nintendo had every right to do what they did.

You won’t have to wait long to get your next Pokemon fix. Sun and Moon is set to release in November.

Note:

I don’t hate Uranium. I admire the work that’s been put into it, but there are laws for a reason and whether or not anyone agrees with them doesn’t change that. Even though they mentioned that they weren’t trying to make a profit on their Patreon they still did. Any amount of money you get from people to help you developer a game is making a profit. If Nintendo lets this slide other people will do the same thing and Nintendo’s IP will be damaged.

I would also like to point out that even though the developers have announced that they’re not working on the game doesn’t mean it’s not being worked on. This is the Internet we’re talking about. If you really want to play this game I’m sure you’ll find a way. (No I’m not linking the site here. )

  1. While I can appreciate effort has been put into the game I’ve never liked the idea of fan Pokémon, unless they’re an evolution they might as well just be called a monster/creature instead of trying to ride the popularity of something popular.
