Hit or Miss – October

Lets see what games are deserving of a buy or not in this month’s edition of hit or miss.

Batman: Return To Arkham

It’s another remaster in a flood of remasters. I’m not interested.

Battlefield 1

maxresdefault-1

Battlefield returns with another installment in the franchise. This one takes place back in WW1 and everyone I know is really excited about it. I’m not one of them. It’s just another Battlefield game to me. The alpha didn’t convince me to buy this game and I can live without it in my life.

Verdict – Miss

Civilization VI

civilization-vi-featured

I plan on losing a few hundred hours of my life once this game releases in a few short days. Civilization V is a masterpiece and I have very high expectations for this game. It should be amazing, but Civilization games have a habit of starting off good, but later expansions make them fantastic. I’m hoping that isn’t the case in Civilization VI and even if it is I’m sure I’m going to love it.

Verdict – Hit

Darksiders: Warmastered Edition:

The fact that this game is coming to the Wii U is awesome, but it’s another remaster in a flood of remasters that have plagued this generation of games. I’m not interested in playing two games I’ve already played.

Verdict – Miss

Dragon Ball Z Xenoverse 2

dragonball_xenoverse2_07-07-16_018

Why is the PC release delayed by 3 days? The first Xenoverse games was pretty mediocre and did nothing to make me a fan of DBZ. I’m excited about part 2, but I might end up buying in a deep Steam sale one of these years.

Verdict – Miss

World of Final Fantasy

maxresdefault-2

I’ll admit that this game is freaking adorable, but I don’t own a Playstation 4 and I have no plans of ever buying one so I guess you all know what my verdict is on this game too.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition

original

You all know how much I love Skyrim. I started my top 5 weekly Skyrim mods series, and gave it a perfect score too, but I’m not really interested in this remaster because I have 300 mods on my Skyrim game right now and I don’t plan on deleting those to start a new Skyrim game that doesn’t even look that good when compared to mine right now.

Verdict – Miss

Titanfall 2

maxresdefault-3

Prepare for Titanfall 2… or not. I’m not getting fooled again by this game and I honestly haven’t watched anything on it. I’m just not interested in it. Shadow Warrior 2, and Doom are the only two FPS games I need in my life right now, but I’m not counting Titanfall 2 out. I know I’ll end up getting it eventually. Just not for $60.

Verdict – Wait For Sale

And that wraps up this month’s edition of hit or miss. This is a really negative list when compared to last month’s, but that’s just how things go some times right? I already know who’s going to disagree with me on the Final Fantasy stuff too :).

If you want to check out a different opinion on World of Final Fantasy check out Cheap Boss Attack’s It’s the freakin’ weekend article. He briefly talked about buying it because he’s a big Final Fantasy fan. Check that out for a second opinion if want.

    1. The beautiful thing about PC gaming is everything goes on sale a lot sooner than their console counterparts. Steam sales are amazing and so are some other sites like CD Keys, and Kinguin.

  1. Thanks for the shout out. If anyone is interested in World of Final Fantasy, a demo just released on PSN for it and it’s barely over 1gb. I’m going to check it out tonight and maybe write an impressions post.

The ONLY reason I’m interested in Return to Arkham is because Knight was my first Arkham game and I loved it, so I kind of want to revisit the earlier games. However, remasters typically plummet in price, especially around Black Friday, so I’m holding off until it’s in the $20 range. Same with Skyrim, probably.

    1. I’m getting Skyrim for free, but I won’t be installing it because I have Skyrim with 30+ mods on it. Remasters are one of the worst things to happen in gaming in my opinion. Why play a game we’ve already played before over, and over again. We get fewer new IPs because of this.

Only game I’m really looking forward to is Civilization VI.

      1. “Why play a game we’ve already played before over, and over again. We get fewer new IPs because of this.”

I agree and disagree on this, because the “we” kind of just means “me.” Not everyone has played the games that are coming out remastered, and it gives people a chance to experience (mostly) well received games they might have missed out on. Like my example for Return to Arkham, the Resident Evil remake, etc.

I wish they’d focus more on new IP, and the truth is most of these developers outsource these remasters to third party teams rather than doing it themselves. It’s cheap, easier work, and they can focus on their own stuff. It’s not always devs doing their own remasters.

      2. I understand where you’re coming from, but there are way too many remasters. What’s the point of upgrading to another console when it’s just releasing the same games you have access to already? This generation of games can’t compete with last generations in my opinion. And the reason why most remasters suck, or don’t look better than the original, is because the develops let their B team do it.

Return to Arkham actually looks worse than the original games to me.

I’m all for remasters of really old games. Bioshock, even though it’s disappointing, was a good remaster because of it’s age and so was the Master Chief Collection. Tomb Raider and Metro Last Light didn’t need remasters.

      3. We went through the same ordeal last generation when every publisher demanded HD Collections of PS2-era stuff, so it’s not as if this is something new. Granted they upscaled games that were never in HD up to minimum standards, but there are people who were Xbox gamers last gen that went with the PS4 this gen (which is understandable, given the XBox’s less than stellar reveal that E3), and vice versa. I was an Xbox guy, so when I got my PS3 I picked up the HD remasters of games I missed, like Sly Cooper, Jak & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, etc. It’s the same reason I got The Last of Us and Journey on PS4, since I missed out on them last-gen.

I’m with you in some respects, since a lot of remasters seem like shoddy cash grabs or really don’t need to exist (Darksiders 2 and the Prototype duo come to mind). It’s a double-edged sword, really.

      4. You’re right about it being a double edged sword. Maybe I’m just tired of all of the remaster that’s released over the last two years and it’s made me a little grumpy :).

      5. Trust me, I know what it’s like to be grumpy or feel jaded at the same old shit releasing ad nauseum. It’s normal. I just try to look at everything more objectively now.

      6. So do I. I’m more open minded about things now when compared to when I first started writing on WordPress. I understand why console owners would go for remasters, but I’m a PC gamer now and remasters on PC are pointless if you already own the game.

Most remasters on PC are really cheap or free so I can’t complain about that. I didn’t pay a penny for the Bioshock remasters and I’m not paying for Skyrim Special Edition.
