Dragon Quest VII First Impression

Dragon Quest VII finally got here and I’ve been playing it nonstop. Read on to find out what I think of my first few hours.

It’s not everyday that I find a game that takes as long to start as Dragon Quest VII. My first hour wasn’t spent getting blown up in space, fighting my way to a boss, or exploring the world around me. It was spent, mostly, reading dialogue from various different npcs and rediscovering Dragon Quest VII again.

This game is gorgeous on the 3DS. I love the new art direction, sprites, and environments over the original Dragon Quest VII. I did notice a few fps dips in the prologue, but 95% of the time the game runs flawlessly.

The combat is a breath of fresh air for me. I’ve been playing so many action games lately that’s nice to get back to something slower. Dragon Quest VII still has the classic traditional turn based combat of yesteryear. It’s great and I can’t wait to unlock the ability to choose my character classes. I also really want to get a slime partner too.

The story is very interesting so far, but I can live without the annoying sounds that play as I’m reading the dialogue. It’s not a major issue, but it does get annoying after awhile. I like how this game takes it’s time telling it’s story and everything doesn’t happen right away. Newer games doesn’t do this and I miss that.

I’m really enjoying Dragon Quest VII right now. It started off really slow, but once I was able to fight monsters it got a little faster. I refuse to move on from the village that I discovered until I can buy all of the equipment that’s available for my party. I want to be properly prepared before I start my adventure forward and I don’t mind the grind at all.

Have you played Dragon Quest VII? What do you think of it?

  1. Awesome you’re enjoying it! Thanks for reminding me that I need to get through it too. I’m enjoying it so far, but other games interrupted my progress. That, and the fact that this game is quite long! I want to get through it within the next month though!

    1. I keep hearing that I’ll get 100+ hours from it so I’m excited :).

So far it’s really good. I’m going to be on my 3DS for awhile because I’m expecting Monster Hunter Generations in the mail any day now, and I just got Shin Megami Tensei Record Breaker 2. After that I plan on buying Pokemon Sun/Moon, and hopefully by Christmas I’ll be able to play through Shin Megami Tensei IV Apocalypse.

  2. I remember loving it on Playstation, but man, it’s so damn long, haha. I think I remember it being maybe 30 hours in when classes start opening up, but it’s a great playthrough. If you dig this, I highly recommend tracking down a copy of DQ Hand of the Heavenly Bride on DS. Best DQ, imo. Have fun!
