Mass Effect Andromeda Gameplay Trailer and Thoughts

The official Mass Effect Andromeda gameplay reveal trailer is here and it’s awesome.

I’ve been waiting a really long time to see what this game is all about and I saw a lot of really neat things in the trailer that makes me think that this game will be fantastic, but I also saw some pretty underwhelming things too.

I’ll list them down below and give my opinion about each of them.

The Protagonist

The female protagonist is complete shit so far. She was that bad in this gameplay reveal. I wasn’t drawn to her like I was with the male/female versions of Shepard. The gun disarm scene was horrible and the voice actress didn’t even try to sound intimidating. I really hope we get a male reveal trailer so I see how the voice actor for him does. I usually play a male in Mass Effect anyway so I’m a lot more interested in how he’s going to perform over the female lead.

Gameplay

The gameplay looked really solid, but it’s not the best I’ve ever seen. This is the best the gameplay has ever looked in a Mass Effect game though. The melee combat was brutal, but I won’t be able to really get a feel for it by watching videos. When it comes to ranking gameplay of any game it’s best to do it while you’re playing it yourself. I’m really impressed with what I’ve seen of it though.

Story:

This is the biggest issue for me so far. I’m not impressed with the story at all and that scares me because of how good the previous Mass Effect stories were. I know we don’t know much about the story yet, but even what we don’t know can’t compete with Shepard going up against the Reapers. We’re a Pathfinder that’s goal is to find a suitable home for humanity in this new galaxy that we’ve discovered.

Is It Open World Or Zone Based?

The gameplay reveal made Andromeda look like a big open world. Is this true? Or is it more like Dragon Age Inquisition? Can we really land on every planet we come across or just some of them? Hopefully we’ll know soon, but I really loved the resource gathering and crafting system that I saw. Crafting my own armor in a Mass Effect game is something that I’ve always wanted to do in this series.

The trailer showed a lot in just a few minutes. We got to see some gameplay, a horrible cutscene with female Ryder, resource gather, crafting, and some exploration. I’m really excited for Mass Effect Andromeda, but I think I’ll cater my expectations a little on the story side of things. I just don’t like the protagonist right now, but I’m willing to overlook that if the rest of the game is as awesome as it appears to be.

I wonder if we can build or upgrade settlements in this game since we’re in charge of finding suitable homes for the human race? That could be cool if it’s done correctly.

What did you think of the big Andromeda reveal?

    1. The female protagonist was cringe worthy. Every time I play Mass Effect it’s always as Male Shep :). I preferred the male over Jennifer Hale, but she was really good too. Both the male/female voices were great in the Mass Effect trilogy. I hope I can say the same about the upcoming game.

  1. I should watch, but like you said, not a whole bunch has really excited me for this. Shame, cause ME2 is one of the best games ever.
I don’t have the time anymore to play games like I used to, but I still like to keep an eye on things. Nice site.

    1. The Mass Effect series is my all time favorite game series. I’m still excited for Andromeda, but I think I had unrealistic expectations for it. I think it’s going to be a good game, but I doubt it’ll live up to what the three previous games did.

      Thanks :).
