Wrestlemania 33 Review

I’m doing something different here. I’ve been watching WWE again for the last few months and I’ve been debating on whether or not I should start writing about it. Last night’s ending to Wrestlemania is one that I must share my opinion on because of the impact that the Undertaker had on my life and this is his final Wrestlemania.

Wrestlemania 33 was filled with great moments, but also had it’s share of bad matches too. I’m going to go over all of them and save the biggest match, for me at least, for last.

Cruiserweight Championship – Neville vs Austin Aries

Winner – Neville

The cruiserweight division in WWE is a joke right now, but these two dudes put on a good show to open Wrestlemania. It wasn’t the match of the night like some people thought it would be, but it was a great opening to the show in my opinion. I really like Neville too so I’m glad he won.

Match Grade – B-

Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal

Winner – Mojo Rawley?

Who thought this dude would win the match? Please raise your hand because I thought for sure Braun Strowman had this match and I was really surprised when he got knocked out of the ring. After he was eliminated I thought Luke Harper was going to win and I thought I was right for awhile… until he got eliminated too. And why the fuck did you let Rob Gronkowski in the ring? He’s a great TE not WWE superstar…

Match Grade – C-

Intercontinental Championship – Dean Ambrose vs Baron Corbin

Winner Dean Ambrose

I really wanted the kid to win this match and become the new Intercontinental Champion because Dean Ambrose is such a boring guy in the ring. Dean Ambrose can’t put a match on his shoulders and excite the crowd the way other superstars can. He doesn’t have any exciting moves, and he usually needs to be carried in a match for it to be entertaining. This match was really boring. It had one moment when Baron Corbin booted him in the face on a nice reversal, but that was it. It looks like WWE has more plans for Ambrose. I hope Corbin gets a good push this year and wins his first title.

Match Grade – C-

AJ Styles vs Shane McMahon

Winner – AJ Styles

At first I was disappointed that AJ Styles was going up against Shane because I think he deserved to be fighting for some kind of championship at Wrestlemania, but these two dudes brought the house down in this match. It was amazing and Shane did some crazy shit in his match. AJ styles was equally amazing and eventually won the match. I really enjoyed this one. This was definitely my match of the night!

Match Grade – A+

United States Championship – Chris Jericho vs Kevin Owens

Winner – Kevin Owens

Nothing topped the AJ Styles/Shane McMahon match, but this one came pretty damn close. Chris Jericho and Kevin Owens put on one hell of a show. This match was physical and kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. KO won the match by delivering a brutal powerbomb to Chris Jericho on the apron and won the United States Championship.

Match Grade – A

Raw Women’s Championship Elimination Fatal 4 Way – Charlotte vs Sasha Banks vs Nia Jax vs Bayley

Winner – Bayley

I knew Bayley would win this match, but I wanted Charlotte to win. I’m not sold on Bayley as Women’s Champion. She’s the weakest performer on the Raw roster in my opinion and she was the weakest performer last night. This match was alright, but didn’t last very long and all the best part was when Nia Jax was throwing everyone across the ring. Charlotte Flair’s entrance last night was great by the way.

Match Grade – C-

Raw Tag Team Ladder Match – The Hardy Boyz (WHAT!) vs Gallows & Anderson vs Enzo & Cass vs Sheamus & Cesaro

Winner – The Hardy Boyz

The Hardy Boyz made their big return on the grandest stage of them all and blew everyone away. No one expected it and when their music started I lost my shit. This match was really good and everyone put on solid performances. We even saw Jeff Hardy jump off of a really big ladder and nail two dudes with his swanton bomb.

Match Grade – B+

John Cena & Nikki Bella vs The Mix & Maryse

Winner – John Cena & Nikki Bella

This was probably the worst match of the night, but it ended great. At the end of the match John Cena finally proposed to his long time girlfriend and the crowd went nuts. The match itself was really poor and that’s what I’m rating here.

Match Grade – D-

Seth Rollins vs Triple H

Winner – Seth Rollins

I was really looking forward to this match because I love Triple H. He’s one of my all time favorite wrestlers. I think Triple H carried this match and performed better than Rollins on every level. Seth Rollins is no chump though and did some pretty crazy shit in this match. The ending was weak, but the match was excellent all round. Seth Rollins really needs to use another finisher because his pedigree sucks and Triple H should have won this match.

Match Grade – B+

WWE Championship Match – Bray Wyatt vs Randy Orton

Winner – Randy Orton 😦

Randy Orton didn’t need to win this match. Bray Wyatt losing on his second title defense makes him look like a weak champion. The era of Wyatt should have lasted longer then a month. The only memorable moments in the match was the freaky shit that happened in the ring. Everything else was mediocre at best. Why does Randy Orton need to be a 13 time champion? Why?

Match Grade – D

WWE Universal Championship – Golberg vs Brock Lesnar

Bill Golberg took a trip to Suplex City and got destroyed. He delivered a bunch of spears, and a jackhammer, but in the end it was the beast that was left standing. Goldberg got booed in this one by the way. I guess the Goldberg experiment is finally over and I’m glad it is. He should have never won the Universal Championship from Kevin Owens, but I’ll be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the match for what it was. That spear through the barricade was pretty sweet.

Match Grade – C+

Smackdown Women’s Championship – Naomi vs Natalya vs Becky Lynch vs Alexa Bliss vs Mick James vs Carmella

Winner – Naomi

I saw this one coming as soon as Naomi announced that she would be able to compete at Wrestlemania. Don’t even get me started on her injury gimmick and “comeback” at Wrestlemania. WWE played to the hometown favorites. The match started off terrible because Naomi was the only superstar that they let have a full entrance. Everyone else just interrupted each other and went straight into the ring. The match didn’t last very long, but it did have a good moment or two.

Match Grade – C

Undertaker vs Roman Reigns

Winner – Roman Reigns

The Undertaker’s last match of his career was against Roman Reigns. Roman Reigns is about as interesting as a door. He doesn’t appeal to me and I think of 5 other superstars that would have made this match more interesting. I really wanted Undertaker to go out on top, but I knew the chance of that happening was slim. WWE is trying to make Reigns the next John Cena and people are going to hate him every step of the way.

Match Grade – C

Wrestlemania 33 started off great, but felt rushed towards the end and almost fell flat on it’s face. I enjoyed seeing AJ Styles in his first Wrestlemania and he did steal the show with Shane McMahon. Just about all of the Championship matches were average except Chris Jericho vs KO, and the Hardy Boyz triumphant return to the WWE. This years Wrestlemania could have been great, but it’s just good and that’s a shame because it did have some great matches on the card. The only thing that I’ll probably remember when I think of this Wrestlemania a few years from now is AJ Styles vs Shane and the Undertaker’s big retirement.

The Undertaker’s retirement was really awesome though. I love the way he exited the ring, kissed his wife, and took the lift back down to where he came from. You’ll be missed Undertaker. Wrestlemania won’t be the same without you.

Final Grade – C+

What did you think of Wrestlemania 33?

  1. I imagine Reigns beating Taker got a bunch of boos. AJ can have a good match with anyone. He deserved a better opponent, but at least Shane can make up for lack of wrestling skills with high spots.
