Lets Talk About Mass Effect’s Hiatus!

I know I should be resting because I just got home from the hospital, but when I read something about my favorite game series of all time being put on Hiatus I had to open up my laptop, grab a soda, and start typing. Here’s what I think of Mass Effect’s Hiatus!

The Internet has blown up about the news that the Mass Effect series is on hiatus. Some people love it and some hate it. I… don’t know what to think yet. It’s completely normal for studios to downsize and work on other projects after a game has been released. How else are employees going to keep their jobs? You can’t have your entire team working on a finished game. Downsizing the studio to work on other projects in different locations is what every developer does. Bioware isn’t the only developer that’s had this happen to them.

Andromeda is a finished product. After Mass Effect 3 released the studio was downsized and most of them were reassigned to work on Dragon Age: Inquisition. This situation doesn’t seem like a huge deal to me, but I could be wrong. EA’s executive came out and said that he wasn’t pleased by the review scores that Andromeda received from both fans and critics. I don’t think it’s fair to compare Andromeda to the original Mass Effect trilogy because Andromeda is a reboot for the franchise. I think Andromeda is a great game with some flaws that could be improved in it’s sequel. It’s not a terrible game the animation controversy was blown way out of proportion in my opinion. Mass Effect deserves to continue as a series. It’s my favorite series of all time and I’ve fallen in love with the world that Bioware has managed to build in their games.

Until EA releases a statement that says there will be no more Mass Effect games I don’t think we should worry. I don’t think EA has corrupted Bioware, or is trying to destroy them. I think Bioware will be okay and I think Mass Effect will be fine moving forward. We’re still going to get patches, and DLC. When the studio was downsized after Mass Effect 3 we still got the Return to Omega, and Leviathan DLCs. I think the same will happen here. At least EA didn’t sell off Bioware like Square Enix did the creators of Hitman.

If history is anything to go by then we’re going to be getting anther Dragon Age game before the next Mass Effect game. It’s always happened this way. First we got Mass Effect, then Dragon Age Origins, then Mass Effect 2, then Dragon Age II, then Mass Effect 3, then Inquisition, and now Andromeda. See the pattern here?

If this is the end of Mass Effect I’ll be incredibly disappointed because I think Andromeda deserves a sequel and deserves to tell it’s story.

What do you think of this? Is Mass Effect doomed?

Update:

So… it looks like the series is actually on ice right now. The studio has been downsized, but if I go by the statement released by EA the only thing the remaining staff of Andromeda is working on is new multiplayer content. Multiplayer content for a Mass Effect game?! What the fuck are they thinking? Who plays Mass Effect for the multiplayer? I really hope that isn’t true because the way Andromeda ended sets itself up for a sequel or expansion. The story isn’t complete and the game has improved since it’s released. Twitter is filled with passionate fans that want more Mass Effect. Don’t ignore us EA. We waited 5 years for Andromeda. Don’t make us wait 5 more for a sequel. Support Andromeda and make the game we all wanted it to be. Don’t give up on it.

  1. ME3 got a fair amount of post game MP content so it’s possible they had a lot of that planned well in advance.

I don’t think it’ll be the end of Mass Effect. Just might be another few years until EA/Bioware get the right team together again for it. Their announcment just prevents anyone from expecting much right now.

  2. Sometimes a break is for the best. It makes people look forward to the next game even more (look at the gap between Persona 4 and 5 for example.)

Hopefully the staff keep their jobs and are just reassigned to new projects like the new Bioware IP.

    1. There was already a big gap between Mass Effect 3, and Andromeda though. It took them 5 years to make Andromeda and now they’re giving it another long break. I don’t want Mass Effect to release like the Elder Scrolls. One every 5-8 years…
