Lets Talk About Disgaea 5!

I couldn’t take playing anymore Puyo Puyo Tetris and went to my nearest Walmart and purchased Disgaea 5!

Puyo Puyo Tetris isn’t a terrible game, but it’s not a good one either. I don’t mind playing Tetris, but I need a good RPG to play on the go and that was my main reason for buying Disgaea 5. I know I could have got Breath of The Wild, but I’m not ready to jump back into the world of Zelda just yet since I put so many hours into the Wii U version of the game. I don’t feel like starting over from scratch just yet, but I do plan on finishing it/reviewing it some time in the near future.

Disgaea 5 is a silly game that plays like Fire Emblem, and Final Fantasy Tactics. The story isn’t meant to be taken super seriously like Fire Emblem games, but the gameplay is on par, if not better, than Fire Emblem. I’ve got about 5 hours of gameplay in this game, but I’m only on chapter 2 because I repeated a few stages multiple times to try and get the best reward for them. So far that hasn’t happened, but I’ll keep trying. I’m not used to playing a Disgaea game. I’m a fan of the series, but I haven’t played all the games and I’ve never completed one.

I was a little overwhelmed by the amount of characters that I had access to at the beginning of the game and some of them are really op right now. I purposely refrain from using them so I enjoy the combat more with the weaker characters. I like every character class that I’ve tried so far. My favorite is monk, and healer. There is no pairing system in this game like in Fire Emblem, but that’s replaced by some insane double moves that characters can perform when they’re standing next to each other. I’ve seen one of my characters use the other as a weapon and bash a poor goblin thing to death. The gameplay is chaotic, but really good and I can easily see myself getting lost in this game.

I really like Disgaea 5 right now. The story even got sort of interesting after I got through the really long tutorial. There was a option to skip it, but I thought it would be best to learn everything on my first go instead of just winging it like I usually do in every game I play. I have no idea when I’ll have a review of this game up since I heard it’ll take up to 100 hours to compete. I’m in no rush to complete it. I just want to take my time and enjoy it. I also really love using my Switch in handheld mode. I only dock it to charge it and I did play this game for about 20 minutes on the TV and it looks really good. I expected to see blurry character models and environments, but instead I everything scaled really well. I prefer playing handheld mode, but that could change when I get Mario Kart 8 Deluxe :).

Do you have Disgaea 5? What do you think of it?

  1. Glad to hear that you are enjoying the game. Back in 2015 a certain someone said the following on my Disgaea 5 review…

“Never could get into this series. I don’t own a PS console and I’m not planning on owning one any time soon. It sounds like more of the same with this series so I think I’ll avoid this game”

    🙂

    1. Lololol. You have a great memory! I didn’t remember that comment I made. I’ve gotten into some games/genres I didn’t think I would since I wrote that :).

I’m really enjoying it and it’s the best game I own on my Switch at the moment.
