Lets Talk About The Xbox E3 Press Conference!

E3 is here! It’s the time of the year where we learn about new consoles, and games. Microsoft is the first of the big three to have their press conference this year and… I really hope all you Xbox fans out there are happy because this was one average show today.

Microsoft finally revealed their new console. It’s small, it’s slick, and it looks like a PS2 to me. It’s powerful, and can definitely give your games a nice fps, but it’s also $499 and Microsoft showed nothing to justify the price of this thing. I’m going to go in depth about a few of the games that were announced, but I will not cover everything because most of it was shit in my opinion.

Lets start with what I liked about the conference.

Bioware’s New IP is Called Anthem and It Looks Really Good

Bioware’s A team finally announced the big secret project that they were working on and I like it. I like that it’s in third person, I loved the graphics, and what little I saw of the gameplay looked solid too. This game is beautiful and I hope it isn’t downgraded before release. My wife and I are already talking about playing it together and we’re super excited about playing a new co op game together.

Ori and The Will of The Wisp s A Day One Buy For Me

Ori and The Blind Forest is one of the best games I’ve played this generation. I love it and I’ve always wondered if it sold well enough to get a sequel. I guess this proves that it did because it was announced today and even though we didn’t see any gameplay I’m still buying it as soon as it releases because I know it’s going to be good. That song hit me in the feels too…

Ashen Looks, Sounds, and Reminds Me of Dark Souls

Everything that I heard while watching Ashen in action reminded me of Dark Souls. The name is what you’re called in Dark Souls III and the gameplay looks identical too. I’m really interested in this.

We’re Getting Another Metro Game!

I’m a huge fan of the Metro series. Another Metro game is a must buy for me and I can’t wait to get lost in this brilliant world again. If you’ve never played Metro I highly recommend playing through the first two games before considering this one.

And that’s it for the good. Lets get to what I didn’t like about the press conference.

There Was No Console Seller

I was waiting for a reason to buy the Xbox One X. I wanted Microsoft to blow me away with a new IP that really showed what their new console was capable of and they didn’t. Everything that interested me I can get on my PC. I have no reason to buy this overpriced console. $500 is going to be a tough sell for Microsoft because the press conference today was average and the games that they did show off, except for a select few games, didn’t showcase what the X is capable of. Why should I spend $500 on your console if the games don’t even look better than they do on the original Xbox One? Why should I even buy a Xbox One when I have a good PC? Why should I buy this console instead of the PS4 Pro this holiday season? None of those questions were answered today and that’s incredibly disappointing to me.

Microsoft doesn’t have a Breath of The Wild or Horizon Zero Dawn to help sell their console like the Switch, and PS4 do. I guess there’s State of Decay 2, and Crackdown 3…

Is It Just Me or Has Crackdown 3 Been Severely Downgraded?

Crackdown 3 looked awful. First we got a cringe worthy trailer of Terry Cruz (love him, but this was awful imo) as Commander Jaxon. Then we saw some gameplay, ugly ass graphics, and that’s it. Crackdown 3 is not a system seller and at this point I don’t even see people caring about it anymore. Crackdown was never a triple A series and I don’t see this game “saving” Xbox and catching it up to Playstation or even competing with Super Mario Odyssey, or any game that releases this holiday season. Since I’m on the topic of downgrades…

Was Shadow of War Downgraded Too?

Shadow of War was ugly in my opinion. Maybe it was just the area that they decided to show off, but I was not impressed at all with the quality of the graphics in this game. For this to be running on the Xbox One X and not impress me is a problem because that’s all Microsoft has been hyping for the last year. Graphics aren’t super important to me in games. I’ve played some ugly ass games and enjoyed the crap out of them, but if you’re marketing your consoles graphical prowess you should at least make sure you’re showing off the best locations in your games because what I saw was really average. The combat also looks like it took a step back from the previous game. Maybe the person playing was just really bad at it, but I wasn’t impressed. I lost some hype after watching it today…

Code Vein Looks Really Interesting, But All We Saw Was The Exact Same Trailer From May

Code Vein is right up my alley. It plays like a Dark Souls game and looks like a anime. I’m not into anime, but I appreciate the different art style that this game has over other Dark Souls inspired games like Bloodborne, and Nioh, but this trailer looked identical to the one that released in May. I think this was just Microsoft reminding everyone that they do get the occasional Japanese game on their console that probably won’t sell very well…

Sea of Thieves Was Shown Off and It’s Not For Me

For those of you that have been waiting for Sea of Thieves guess what? You’re going to have to wait another year because it’s still not ready to be released. The gameplay was… a bit average for my taste. I don’t really care for the whole “cooperative” experience that was being shown off or the attempt at comedy that I personally thought was bland, but I know that people will like this game. It’s not a system seller and that’s becoming a common theme here. There is NO system seller to talk about.

Black Desert Online Is Heading To Xbox, But There’s A Risk Involved

I’ve left my PC on for up to 5 days without turning it off. Black Desert is a game that rewards you for going AFK and leaving your PC on for incredibly long periods of time. I have a friend that has over 500 hours in this game and he can tell you how many days he’s left his PC running so he could farm for some materials that he needed to finish building his boat. Out of those 500 hours he has at least 200 hours spent AFK.

This is in the negative because consoles are different. Will you leave your console on for 4 or 5 days straight without turning it off? How will that impact your new Xbox One X. Can the Xbox One or Xbox One X handle insane hours like that without risking some side effects?

Black Desert can be enjoyable, but it’s not for everyone. My go to MMO is ESO.

The Verdict:

I feel like I wasted my time today. Nothing I saw convinced me to rush out and preorder the Xbox One X and there was no console seller. I don’t know anyone that’s excited for this console and I’m curious to see how well it’ll sell because of the price cut that the PS4 is bound to get this holiday season. Most of the games were average in my opinion and all of the best games that I saw are also going to release on the Playstation 4, and PC. I have no reason to buy this overpriced console.

C-

If “you” liked what you saw that’s fine. I respect your opinion and I’m glad you think you’re getting your money’s worth, but this is “my” opinion and we can have an intelligent conversation without resorting to name calling.

What did you think of Microsoft’s E3 showing? Are you buying the Xbox One X? Are you upgrading from a previous Xbox?

  1. i really liked the show in terms of the games they showed. Maybe it’s not all for me, but i liked the diversity shown. Problem is as you said, how many of these are really exclusives? A lot gave me the impression with the odd wording in the trailers that they are timed exclusives.

Which brings me to the xbox one x. Like you asked, why does anyone need this? forget the fact that a lot of this is on PS4, but looking at even just the actual MS exclusives, they are all available on Windows. Which is nice, but again it begs the question, who is the Xbox one X for?

Sure it’s a powerful console, but a podcast I checked out brought up a good point that making a good PC as well doesn’t cost too much more. And if this is for those PC gamers who want a powerful console, then why not just still build a PC? and have the added benefit of tweaking game settings? They also said it would have been interesting if xbox one X had the ability to tweak settings so gamers can favour visuals or performance to their liking.

I don’t know if MS’s goal was to tap into the PC gamers wanting a beefy console, but if it was, I don’t think they achieved this either. For the record, I want them to do good and sell, because the better they do, it forces everyone to step up their game and in the end, fans win. But I am still confused at the direction they are going with the Xbox One X.

on a side note, Anthem looks rad 🙂

    1. I don’t know what Microsoft’s goal is. They have this powerhouse of a console, but no games to go along with it. I’m tired of Forza and that’s all they really showed that was a triple A exclusive. I like the power that it has, but every game I want from the conference can be brought on PC/PS4. I have no need of this and it’s overpriced too.

Anthem… looks so good. I can’t wait to see more of it.

  2. I would say a positive thing from it was the sheer volume of games (and seemingly a lot of exclusives). I’d been saying for a while that they need a very game centric presentation and that’s what they’ve done, so credit there. The lack of a huge release to come with their new system though could be an issue for its release.

    1. Most the games they showed were average in my opinion and can be brought on PC. I have no reason to own anything Xbox at this point. The X is overpriced because it’s going to have to compete with the Pro, and Switch (Mario Odyssey) this holiday season and Crackdown 3 isn’t going to save them :).

Is there anything in particular you’re looking forward to? I think Ashen had a nice Dark Souls vibe to it.

      1. Ashen looks great, yes. I’ve been keen on Cuphead for a long time too. I love the look of The Last Night and want to see more of it. Anthem could be pretty cool but I’m not holding my breath for it.
Whilst there weren’t really any games that would make me rush out and buy a system, as someone who already owns one I was quite happy with what I saw.

      2. I lost interest in Cuphead. I think Bioware’s A team is going to give us a good game, but I never lost my trust in Bioware like most people have :).
