Top 10 Games of This Generation

After mulling this over for the past weeks I finally came up with 10 games that I think stand above all the rest in this generation of games. Here are my top 10 games of this generation.

I’m not counting the 3DS or Wii U for this this because I consider the Switch both a handheld and home console. It’s the next generation for both the 3DS and Wii U and only games on that console have been considered for this list.

10. Wolfenstein: The New Order

The best FPS ever made is a great way to start my list. The New Order is amazing and gave me everything I wanted and more in a modern FPS game. There’s no multiplayer so all the focus went into the campaign mode and that campaign is amazing. If you haven’t played this game yet you should.

9. Stellaris

Stellaris is a great strategy game. Everything takes place in real time and that adds to it’s charm in my opinion. Discovering the galaxy, defending my empire, and meeting new races is what this game is about and I had a lot of fun before I called it quits earlier this year.

8. Civilization VI

Civilization V is one of the greatest games ever made. Civilization VI isn’t there yet, but it’s still one of the best games to release this generation of gaming. There’s really no such thing as generations for a PC gamer, but I thought I should add this game because it’s the newest one in the series and because it’s better than half the shit consoles have.

7. The Division

I can imagine the responses for adding this game on my list. The Division has gotten a lot better and I’m approaching 200 total hours of play time in this game. I love this game. It’s like Diablo with guns and I love grinding for new loot, doing global events, and exploring New York with my wife. It’s a lot of fun and I don’t see myself putting this game down any time soon… Unless they announce a Division 2.

6. Dark Souls III

I have over 300 hours of gameplay in Dark Souls III. I’ve completed this game without dying, twice, did a all naked run, and built about 13 different characters. The pvp can’t compete with Dark Souls II, but it’s still fun and the fast paced gameplay makes this the best Dark Souls game to play. It’s not the best in terms of story or even lore, but it’s leagues higher than every Dark Souls clone out there and any game that I sink 300 hours of my life into is a game that should make my top 10 games right?

5. Dragon Age: Inquisition

I’m well aware that this game released on last generation hardware. I played this game on the Xbox One and completed it a few times on that console before I bought the game on PC. Dragon Age is one of my all time favorite game series. Dragon Age: Inquisition is beautiful, has great gameplay, a great story, and the best cast of characters ever assembled in a Dragon Age game. I can’t recommend this game enough. If you haven’t played it you should.

4. Fallout 4

I love Bethesda and I love their games. I don’t care about all of the negative Steam reviews. I love this game. It gives me freedom to do whatever I want and the gameplay is the best it’s been in the series by far. Don’t listen to the idiots that will tell you not to buy the game because of the Creation Club. Fallout 4 is a great game that’s worth the asking price. It’s a fantastic game.

3. Xcom 2

Xcom 2 is perfect. The new expansion added a lot of content to an already fantastic game. Do you like hard games? Games don’t get much harder than Xcom. You will die in this game. You’ll lose good soldiers and quit because of it. I can’t tell you how many times this game has put me back in my place after I got comfortable because I was on a few match win streak. Xcom 2 is the best game in the series and if Firaxis continues to drop quality DLC it’s only going to keep getting better.

2. Divinity: Original Sin 2

I struggled with the placement of this game. I love this game enough to put it at number 1, but I’m going to wait until more content is released because the number 1 game is one of my favorite games of all time. Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the best CRPG ever made and you should buy it. Need more than that? Then click here for my really long first impression of the game.

1. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Did you expect a different game to be number 1? The Witcher 3 is a masterpiece with two full expansions that would put most AAA games to shame. This game is filled with great content from beginning to end. The story, gameplay, soundtrack, characters, and lore are excellent. Well… The gameplay isn’t excellent, but it’s still good though. It’s better than Breath of The Wild’s anyway.

You can find my updated review here.

And that wraps up my top 10 games of this generation. What are your top 10 games? Do you agree with my list?

  1. Great list! I think Witcher 3 will be at the top of a lot of lists – even now the storytelling in the game is leaps and bounds beyond other games I’ve played that try to follow a more “adult” path. DA: Inquisition is still on my pile of shame but this might change soon thanks to this. 🙂

    1. Thanks! CD Projekt Red has always told really great stories in their Witcher games. The Witcher 1 had shit combat, but an excellent story, Witcher 2 had okay combat and an excellent story, and The Witcher 3 has the best of both worlds. Great series of games.

DAI is a great imo. Most people complain about the quest structure, which is bad, but it wasn’t a deal breaker for me. Dragon Age has always been about the story and characters you meet along the way and it has both of those in my opinion. If you ever give it another try let me know :).

  2. Haven’t played all of these. Wasn’t a huge fan of Fallout 4 personally, but I will rate XCOM 2 as amongst the best games of a long time, not just this generation. I’d probably pick DOOM over Wolfenstein, but both are stunning shooters.

    1. I wasn’t a huge fan of Doom. The single player was good, but the MP sucked big time. Wolfenstein was the better game imo. Xcom 2 is probably the best game of it’s kind.

Fallout 4 isn’t for everyone. I love it though :).

      1. I agree, the multiplayer was weak. Preferred the mechanics of DOOM, but the story in Wolfenstein was better.

I enjoyed Fallout 3 over 4. I think the constant settlement stuff early on put me off. Did finish it though! The giant stompy robot bit towards the end was pretty cool.

      2. The settlement building… Took some getting used to. I’m a little disappointed that most of the DLC for this Fallout game went towards that feature instead of towards adding more content for us to explore. The two expansions for this are awesome though and I really enjoyed the game. Fallout 3 was really awesome too. Nuking that little town (forgot the name) was one of the best moments I’ve ever had in gaming.

      3. Megaton (I think). I didn’t do that first time, I was being too nice. But the second time through I did. You get a completely different perspective on the game when you go down that route for it. It’s a genuinely memorable moment in gaming.

I always remember coming across a tiny little town in the middle of nowhere. No quest marker or XP rewards. But if you spoke to the families and dug into their homes a little bit you would find they were cannibals eating unwary travellers. I loved that aspect of the game.

      4. Yep! It’s too bad Fallout 4 lacked those type of moments, It had some moments, but Fallout 3 had so many amazing moments that stuck with me.

  3. Great post! I was scratching my head when I saw Civ VI as Civ V seems to be the better game, but after reading your thoughts I was like like ah ok. I haven’t played divinity but I have it downloaded on steam and hopefully I can get to it this week. Right now I would add on Destiny 2. I wasn’t a fan of the original Destiny but this second installment is amazing! I would also add on my favs Gears of War 4 and Halo Wars 2! Thanks for sharing!

    1. I was tempted to add Civ 5, but I already did that on my Top 10 Games of All Time list. I figured I would give Civ 6 some love. It’s slowly improving into the game I want it to be.

I’m waiting for Destiny 2 to release on PC. I’ll probably pick up some time next year. I’ve never played Gears 4 or Halo Wars 2 :). I’ve heard great things on Gears 4 though.

Original Sin 2 is soooooo good. I hope you enjoy it :). Thanks for commenting!
