Lets Talk About Fire Emblem Warriors!

I caved and bought a copy of Fire Emblem Warriors from Ebay and it finally came in the mail yesterday. I’ve been playing it nonstop and it’s great fun so far.

Fire Emblem Warriors is a game that I’ve always wanted. I love the Fire Emblem series. It’s one of my all time favorite game series and when that Tokyo Mirage Sessions happened I couldn’t help but wonder what a full blown action Fire Emblem game would be like. Fire Emblem Warriors is my answer to that question and it’s really good.

Fire Emblem has never looked better than it does here on the Switch. It’s nice to see Chrom in glorious 3D. The gameplay is a major step up from what we usually get from Koei and the I love how they mixed metal with the classic Fire Emblem theme songs of yesteryear. This game has more Fire Emblem elements then I originally thought it would. The level up screen, History Mode, and way I get to command every character on my team is Fire Emblem. I can even use Master Seals to promote my favorite characters to their next class. There’s a camp mode that allows me to equip new weapons, and customize my heroes and unlock new skills for them to use in battle.

The gameplay is where this game shines. It’s fast paced and offers me hours of fun. I prefer this game to Hyrule Warriors. Maybe it’s because I prefer Fire Emblem over The Legend of Zelda, but I think this game is much better than Hyrule Warriors.

The combat system for mounted warriors is amazing and I hope it carries over into future games from this company. Frederick is a beast on horseback and demolish everything with ease. I do have a few complaints already. I’ve noticed a few clone characters so far and I hate that. Chrom and Lucina fight the exact same way. The only difference between the two characters are their ultimate attacks. I don’t know if they get different combos as I level them up because I’m still early into the game.

Another thing that bugs me is characters like Lissa being an axe user instead of a Cleric like she is in the 3DS game. Why not give Lissa a unique fighting style with a staff instead of completely changing her class? I understand the whole weapon triangle thing, which is an awesome feature in this game by the way, but giving her a staff wouldn’t have broken the game in any way. It’s just a nitpick though. I do love mowing down enemies as Lissa with her big ass axe and using magical abilities to zap them into submission too.

Fire Emblem warriors is great. I love it, my brother loves, and my wife loves it. We’ve been taking turns at it all day long and I’m pretty sure we’re going to continue to play it when I’m done writing this. The performance is great, the gameplay is great, the characters are great, and I’m even enjoying the campaign mode. The campaign’s not great, but it’s not terrible either. I’m glad I purchased this game and I plan on putting a bunch of hours in it before I’m done with it.

What do you think of Fire Emblem Warriors?

  1. I’m kind of mixed on this game. On one hand, I love the FE characters in Dynasty Warriors concept. And I had a lot of fun with it. But it hasn’t quite captivated me the same Hyrule Warriors did. Maybe it’s because History Mode isn’t as well-developed or addictive as the Adventure Maps in HW. It could also be the fact that characters seem more generic, with most of them sharing the same weapon. I mean, the lance users are all basically also fliers. There’s a lack of diversity that even HW had with its instrument-wielding characters. Also, I like the Zelda series more than FE, so there’s that. I do like the translated mechanics like the pair-ups, supports, and the strategy map elements. I also appreciate switching characters on the fly which the original HW didn’t have (only the 3DS version did). Overall, I like it and want to spend more time with it. Shame that its release was so close to a certain other Switch game coming out soon…

    1. I totally get where you’re coming from. I’m more of a Fire Emblem fanboy and I love this game. I agree that Hyrule Warriors had more creative characters, but I don’t mind that there are a lot of sword/lance users in the game. What I do mind is that here is no tank in the game. Where is my Oni Chieftain? How about the Generals? There are no armor clad warriors in this game and that’s a huge missed opportunity imo. That being said I still prefer this game to Zelda and I love History mode over Adventure mode :).

You made a great point about lance users only being able to fly. Where are our ground lance units? There’s no Oboro, or Ephraim. Dozla would make a great tanky character and there’s no villager class! Despite all of that I’m still in love with the game and I see massive potential for either DLC or a sequel further down the road. This is a good starting point imo.

      1. Exactly! There are tons of characters they could have included with unique attributes, like armor tanks or even shuriken/dagger users. It’s a shame that the majority of it are the Fates characters.

  2. Outside of the story being expectedly dull and the combat variety being lackluster (FE heroes use a lot of swords), I really enjoyed the dozen hours it took to complete. Not as much as Hyrule Warriors or DQ Heroes, but it was definitely a fun game to crank out before Mario.

    1. I’m not far into this game at all and I already like it more than both Dragon Quest Heroes and Hyrule Warriors :). I do have some gripes with it, but I’m still enjoying the experience. And I probably won’t get around to buying Mario because I spent my money on this game lol. There’s always next month I suppose.

      1. I like DQ Heroes’ monster summon gimmick a lot, but the game was a bit too long in the tooth. It could have been half its overall length. I remember spending more than 30 hours just on the campaign, which is way more than I like spending in any musou.

Target has a buy 2 get 1 free deal on Friday, but Switch game’s aren’t included. Bummer.

      2. That is a bummer. I thought Dragon Quest Heroes was long too. I’ve never played the second game in the series (still waiting on a Switch release) so I can’t comment on that, but I enjoyed the first one quite a bit. I enjoyed Hyrule Warriors too. I liked how I could change the control scheme to the Legend of Zelda format or just play it like Dynasty Warriors :).

Here’s to hoping I can convince my wife to buy me Odyssey :).
