Top 10 Games of 2017

It’s that time of year again! Here are my top 10 games of 2017!

10. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild

Breath of The Wild is a good game that bites off more than it can chew, but I still really enjoyed it for the most part. Getting lost in Hyrule again was a treat and even though it’s not the best game ever made I have no problem recommending this game to those of you that are looking for a good entry in this longrunning series.

9. The Surge

I didn’t have high expectations for The Surge, but it’s really good. It had a ton of bugs on PC, but I still really enjoyed it and I recommend it to all fans of Souls like games. There is a lot to like here and it’s a great step forward for Deck13. I hope The Surge continues to improve as more content is added to the game.

8. Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight is a fantastic Metroidvania game that lets us play as a bug that kills other bugs. It’s a great throwback to the Castlevania games of old and I enjoyed getting lost in its world, figuring out where to go, and fighting some insane bosses.

7.  Super Mario Odyssey

Super Mario Odyssey creativity at its’ finest. Nintendo did an excellent job animating Mario and gave us a really good adventure to embark on this time around. The reason why this game is so low on the list is because of its’ length. It’s a really short game and doesn’t have a strong end game. I still recommend that you buy this game. It’s a gem and worth the asking price.

6. Fire Emblem Warriors

I didn’t expect this game to make my top 10 this year. Fire Emblem Warriors is better than I ever thought it would be. I have over 80 hours in this game and I still haven’t 100% it yet. Fire Emblem Warriors has great replay value, a great cast of characters (even though most of them are sword users), and is a blast to play locally. Buy this game!

5. For Honor

For Honor is an underrated gem. It has fantastic gameplay that gives us full control of our character and lets us go to war as Vikings, Samurai, or Knights. It’s chaotic and has a learning curve, but can be enjoyed by casuals too. It’s my new favorite fighting game and it’s gotten a lot better since it’s rough launch back in February.

4. The Elder Scrolls Legends

I’m a huge card game fan both digitally and in real life. The Elder Scrolls is my favorite gaming series of all time. When Bethesda announced that they were making a trading card game I was hyped and it lived up to the hype for me. It’s an excellent card game that I can’t get enough of.

I didn’t review this game, but you can find a good first impression I wrote here.

3. Mass Effect: Andromeda

Andromeda was unjustly bashed and ridiculed when it released. The animation controversy was blown out of proportion and it was labeled as the worst game of 2017 (until Battlefront 2 anyway). The game I played is fantastic and is a worthy successor to the greatest trilogy of games ever created. It’s worth every hour I put into it and I know I’ll eventually play through it again someday.

2. Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

The New Colossus told an incredible story and backed it up with nonstop action and WTF moments. This game is amazing and had me wanting more when the end credits rolled. I can’t wait for the next game in this series to drop.

1. Divinity: Original Sin 2

I’ve been raving about this game since I started playing it when it released back in September. It’s fantastic and no game came close to the excellence of this game for me this year. Original Sin 2 is as close to a masterpiece as it gets and I’m glad that it’s been selling so well on PC. The future is bright for both Divinity and Larian Studios.

  1. I’ll admit I kind of jumped on the Andromeda is terrible bandwagon. I’m far too easily convinced by memes and internet hype. Really, I should just keep my mouth shut until I have all the information, but there’s still that dang need to look cool when I should really form my own opinion. I did purchase the game pretty soon after its release, but I haven’t had a chance to play it yet. It’s on the backlog along with Horizon: Zero Dawn and now Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.

I thought that Super Mario Odyssey had a pretty extensive after game though! It does seem quite short, but the kingdoms are pretty extensive with tons of Power Moons to locate. I don’t think I’ve ever found have of them, but I’m not doing any kind of guide until I finish the game on my own. Currently fighting the Lord of Lightning…and losing miserably. I may take the easy way out and do the option to have 9 hits, because I just want to see the ending.

I think SMO is the only game on the list I’ve played, but I asked for Breath of the Wild for Christmas.

    1. I’ve been a defender of Andromeda since its’ release. More and more people that I know are coming around on the game because they had bought into the negative hype train too. Cheap Boss Attack was like that too and even he ended up enjoying the game after he gave it a second chance :). When it comes to the Internet hype thing I find it best to keep a leveled head so I don’t go into a game too excited or too cautious. I try my best to enter every game this way so I can enjoy the experience more. Hellblade is on my wishlist on Steam. I’ll buy it one day and hopefully enjoy it too.

I’m currently on my second playthrough of Odyssey. I’m not into the collecting moon thing, but playing through the game again is just as much fun the second time around as it was the first time I did it. It’s still not my favorite Mario game, but I still like it a lot.

Breath of The Wild… is good. It’s not the greatest game ever made like the game media makes it out to be, but it’s good. I hope you enjoy it :). The funny thing is that I can see it missing my top 10 list if I play a few more games in my backlog.

      1. You’re right. The internet likes to hold onto certain opinions magnifying them until any opposition just gets lost. I’m glad I bought the game. It’s on my to play for next year.

I wish SMO were longer. It’s a lot of fun and not unforgiving when my lack of depth perception leads to an early demise.

Have you played the new Assassin’s Creed yet? I’ve only gotten one session in, but I’m really liking it.

      2. One of my best friends bought Origins for me. It’s really cool and I already think it’s the best Assassin’s Creed game ever made. I’m 24 hours in and I’ve been ignoring it lately because of The Division. I wrote a little something on it if you’re interested in reading it – https://drakulus.com/2017/11/10/lets-talk-about-assassins-creed-origins/

The short version is I think it’s really good and it’s the change that the series needed. You still have to do the boring future shit, but, thankfully, it’s short and I can skip the cutscenes :).

      3. I just reread it. It looks like I either skimmed it or didn’t remember, but liked it. Probably because I hadn’t played it yet and wanted to go in fresh. I’m an RPG fan so the RPG aspects make it even better for me. I like that you can see your character. I’ve just never been a big fan of FPS. I’ve only played it one time not from lack of like, just from lack of opportunity. Hearing that it’s possibly the best AC game out there makes me really happy about dropping the $60 on myself in December 🙂

  2. I hate how people jumped on the “Andromeda is awful” bandwagon without thinking. I hope I get around to playing it this year. It should be fully patched now too.

My Game of the Year is definitely Hellblade. So. Many. Feelz. 🙂

    1. That’s how hate bandwagons are though. It’s sad because Andromeda is a really good game. Bioware did an awesome job and everyone hated them because of the “bad” animations. Some animations were bad, but it was blown way out of proportion imo.

I haven’t gotten around to Hellblade yet. I’ll probably buy it during next year’s summer sale for a good price :).

  3. Divinity II is on my steam wishlist and I’m waiting for a good sale after hearing so many good things. Odyssey has been a hit for me this year as well, Nintendo really hit all the right points in the Mario franchise with that one.

    1. Divinity Original Sin 2 (Divinity II is a completely different game) is fantastic. When you get around to it I hope you enjoy it as much as I did :).

Nintendo had a great year. I enjoyed Breath of The Wild, Fire Emblem Warriors, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Pokken Tournament, and Mario Odyssey. Once I get Xenoblade 2 I’m sure I’ll enjoy that too.
