A Male's Perspective On Gaming Feminism

Spread the Word!

I’ve never put much thought into feminism of any kind. I’ve always thought it was pretty stupid until recently.

What I’ve written below is about a topic I’ve never covered before.

My wife, Lunaliah, and I game together ever single day. We’ve played everything from FPS games to RPGs, and MMOs and whenever I have my mic on I’ve always wondered why she either never had hers on or would only talk with people that we personally know in real life.

I got a good taste of what female gamers go through with immature male gamers and I can understand why they would feel harassed at times. When we were playing Warframe my wife made a comment on the mic and one of the randoms we were teamed up with said, omg you’re a girl!” in the in game chat.

I replied, “does it matter if she’s a girl?” and he simply said, “yes it does because female gamers don’t exist.”

The face I made when I read his comment :]

I was a little confused on his statement because I know many female gamers, but I also know there are just as many, maybe more, female gamers then male gamers. Since females make up most of the world’s population it’s only natural to believe that there are more female gamers then male gamers. I figured I was talking to some sort of teenager because of the way he typed his words and how dumb he sounded so I let it slide, but he wouldn’t let it go.

He kept asking Lunaliah questions about her personal. Keep in mind that I don’t advertise that Lunaliah is my wife while we’re gaming so he had no idea that we were together while he was making a fool of himself. I’m not going to type what he said to her, but just know that it was obscene, and highly uncalled for. It really aggravated Lunaliah because she just wanted to have a good time without some random dude spoiling it for her.

Another time she was on our Xbox One, back when we had one, and she got a random message from a dude asking her if she was a female. After she asked him does it matter he said yes because he wants to get to know her better.

We laughed about it afterwards, but not everyone will take it as lightly as she did. Some women are really sensitive about that kind of stuff happening to them and I can understand why because it’s been happening to my wife more often then I care to admit.

Women shouldn’t have to feel uncomfortable while they’re gaming with friends or by themselves. They should be able to speak without having to worry about some idiot spewing nonsense on his mic or through in game chat.

I want female gamers to know that not every male is that way. 90% of the time I can game with my wife and not have to worry about sexism or anything like that, but that extra 10% does make us a little uncomfortable. If I felt uncomfortable about something someone said to my wife over the mic or through in game chat I can only imagine how she must have felt.

Don’t get me wrong here I’m not here to throw my support behind people like Anita Sarkeesian because she’s wrong more then she’s right in my opinion, but I am supporting the idea behind the unfair treatment of women and I think everyone is allowed to voice their opinions like I’m doing right now.

Kelly from linksaveszelda has written some pretty excellent articles on this topic and I highly recommend checking out her blog. I don’t always agree with her, but I respect her opinions and I always make time to visit her blog and read what’s new.

Fyi my wife is the gamer on the right :].

I never put much thought into feminism before today, but after everything that’s happened to my wife the last few months I’ll gladly throw my support towards women that feel abused in gaming or any form of media because it’s not fair and it should stop. It’s a shame that a minority, yes I said minority, of immature men gamers make the bulk of us look bad.

This is just one guy’s opinion on the subject and you’re welcome to disagree with me on it, but do so in a respectful manner or I will delete your comments.

Thanks for reading.

Online gaming is rife with idiots who will be disrespectful regardless of gender. I think women get picked out more than men because the hobby is so dominated with males. Hopefully, with more girls playing online, things will balance out and a person’s sex won’t be such an issue.

I agree. I think the whole thing is dumb. At the end of the day we’re all just trying to have some fun and we shouldn’t ruin it for each other.

Unfortunately its some kind of perpetual idiocy machine in motion here because, for the most part the women I know mostly don’t worry about mic’s either – neither do I most of the time as well so we someone does speak it is kind of rare and more noticeable. Because most don’t talk it perpetuates this thought that women are rare and don’t game, and thus get that kind of idiocy. Once again reinforcing to others how speaking on a mic can ruin your gaming fun.
