Anthem PC Revisiting

Another Look At Anthem

Spread the Word!

In this series I take another look at a game that I played previously that I either didn’t like or did like and just felt like playing it again. Another Look will be replacing my “revisiting” series moving forward the I couldn’t think of a more controversial game to start this new series with then Anthem!

I know it’s the popular thing to hate on everything EA and Bioware these days, but I never hated Anthem and after playing Marvel’s Avengers I wanted to play something with a better gameplay loop. So I went back to Anthem and here’s what I think of it one year later.

I always enjoyed playing Anthem. The gameplay loop is unlike any other game in its genre and the only problems I had with Anthem (one of which has long been fixed) were the bugs and lack of content. Unfortunately, the lack of content is still present in Anthem, but I do know that Bioware is working on completely revamping the game that fans are calling Anthem 2.0.

But that doesn’t magically make everything better in Anthem. Is it fun to play? Hell yes! Its versatile combat is the best in the genre and when I’m playing it the lack of content doesn’t really bother me, but when I step back and look at what I’m doing it’s just the same few missions over, and over, and over again until I get bored and quit. To be fair that’s pretty much how every looter shooter is, but Anthem took that to another level and nothing has been added since I last played.

But despite all of that I still really enjoy this game. Customizing my Javelin is an incredible feeling and the insane amount of colors, skins, and parts I can add to my Javelin are mind-blowing. I can be as crazy as I like when designing my Javelin before I head into battle. The gameplay is just the icing on the cake for me. Flying through the sky and raining death down on oversized insects below me is the most satisfying thing ever. The gameplay loop is still very fun and makes up for a lot of this game’s shortcomings.

When I reinstalled Anthem I originally planned to roll a new character because it had been so long since I last played, but once I looked at my sexy ass ranger javelin I knew I was going to play as him again. It was honestly like I never left. I was flying through the sky shooting off rockets within the first five minutes of returning. I even gave my ranger some new colors to rock before leaving that boring ass hub that’s still in the game. It’s not as bad as the hub from Avengers, but it’s close.

Customizing my storm javelin

All I did when I played was my dailies and run Heart of Rage in a group. We killed the thing like 7 times, bought a bunch of cosmetic items from the shop with the currency we earned and did some free roam. It was fun and I never had to wait longer than a minute to find a team to play with on GM 1 difficulty. GM 2 on the other hand, is a barren wasteland.

Instead of using my ranger (like I did my first 80 hours in this game), I went with the Storm class. I had found a bunch of masterworks and legendary gear for the Storm class so I thought now would be a good time to try it out and this is how you do a fucking mage class. This class is so much fun to play, but it real squishy. I can hover just about forever and rain lightning bolts down on my enemies.

What I love about this game is that I feel strong. In other looter shooters (The Division mostly) I never felt powerful. This problem is even in the new Avengers game. Nothing should be able to one hit Hulk or Thor. I should feel like the thunder god when I play and I don’t. In Anthem, I never felt weak and that’s because Bioware buffed every javelin in the game to make us feel powerful. This doesn’t make the game easy by any means. But it did make it a lot more fun than other games in this genre.

Anthem isn’t nearly as bad as some people would have you believe. These are the same people that called Andromeda a crap game and I LOVE that game. Does Anthem suffer from a lack of content? Yes, but is it a bad game? No. At least it’s not to me. Playing Anthem is an incredibly satisfying experience and I can’t get enough of it. I played it for 3 hours when I returned and the next day I dropped 4 more into it. I’m really considering rolling a new character (you can have up to 3) because I actually want to replay the campaign again. I think Bioware should just make the campaign replayable for those of us that want to play through it again.

I’m not planning on updating my review of Anthem because nothing has really changed since I last reviewed the game and my stance on it hasn’t changed it. I still think it’s a good game with a severe lack of content that’s worth playing if you want to experience some incredible gameplay, top-notch visuals, and a good campaign. I hope Bioware can successfully revive Anthem the same way Hello Games did with No Man’s Sky.
