After putting more then 70 hours in my first PC playthrough of Borderlands 2 I’m finally ready to review it.
Borderlands 2 is the successor to Borderlands, the popular first person shooter with RPG elements, and it is developed by Gearbox. Borderlands 2 is an excellent game. If you love looting, shooting things, and a good story then you should check this game out. I never thought I would say that about Borderlands but it’s true. Borderlands 2 introduces on of the best villains i’ve ever gone up against and his name is Handsome Jack. Handsome Jack is funny, but ruthless, and a monster. He will do anything to open the vault on Pandora and he doesn’t care who he has to kill to do it. The best part of Borderlands 2 by far are the quest that you do. There are a lot of quest to do in this game. I still haven’t completed all of my quest yet. Every time I think i’m done another one pops up. Some of the best quest in the game are the side quest. They’re all unique and fun to play.
There’s this one bandit walking around asking to be shot in the face! There’s also a midget named matchstick that wants you to sacrifice him to the Firehawk. There is a lot of things for you to do in Borderlands 2 and it will keep you busy for a long time. There are four main characters for you to choose from and two DLC characters. Axton is a Commando. He plays a lot like Roland from the first game but when you level him he’s a major threat and can do some serious damage with his turret. You can even get a skill to get more then one turret applied at a time.
Zero is the Assassin and my least favorite character of the group. He has the ability to turn invisible for a brief amount of time and do some serious damage to bosses or normal enemies. He does the most damage out of all the characters but it takes a while for him to actually get there. You’ll have to completely maximize one of skill trees to see results which makes him a chore to play as at times.
Salvador is the Godzerker, oops I meant Gunzerker, He’s a lot like Brick from the first game but instead of him using his fist he pulls out two guns and starts to rip everything apart! When you level Salvador up he’s literally a god. He can mow down anything if you invest in the right skills.
Maya is a Siren. Only six Sirens can exist at anytime and Handsome Jack said he knows of three of them. Maya’s special ability is to suspend her foes up in the air for a brief time. Later on in the game you can add elemental damage to your attack by choosing the right skill or you can temporarily take control of a single enemy to help you fight. If you want the best out of Maya go with the Cataclysm Skill Tree. That skill tree is about dealing damage and at higher levels Maya can dominate the creatures of Pandora with very little effort.
Gage is a Mechromancer. She summons a giant mech from out of nowhere and it wreaks havoc on the battlefield. Like Axton the mech acts like a companion of sorts and helps you fight the creatures of Pandora. Gage is incredibly powerful and awesome character. My only gripe with her is her voice… it’s annoying.
Kraig is a psycho turned vault hunter. His special ability is using that big ass weapon in his hands to beat the crap out of people. He’s very powerful and his skill tree is amazing. I recommend checking him out simply because he’s a psycho!
The gameplay in Borderlands 2 is your average FPS gameplay but it’s fun and in a way fresh because of the special abilities that each character brings to the table. Looting, and killing things is fun. Especially in multiplayer but I’d advise you to only play mulitplayer with friends. Random people will just focus on taking the loot and leaving you to fare for yourself with crappy equipment. I think Gearbox should have added loot for everyone. That would decrease random people just jumping in for the loot and increase the fun factor in multiplayer. That’s only a minor problem though. On the PC version of the game people i’ve played with are actually pretty cool and I had more fun playing with them then with random’s on the console version of Borderlands 2.
The biggest problem with the PC version of Borderlands 2 is the lack of a local coop mode. On the console version of the game you can play split screen coop and still play online with two other people if you wanted to. That isn’t the case on the PC version and it upset me because my wife and I have to take turns while we play the game. That really affected my opinion on the PC version of the game because playing alone all the time gets a little boring and not to mention lonely. This isn’t a all the time feeling but sometimes I just want to game with my wife and we can’t do that with this game anymore.
Borderlands 2 has four expansions adding even more content to an already content filled game. I highly recommend purchasing the game of the year edition so you can experience all the dlc for one nice price. Every expansion adds a new region for you to explore filled with new enemies, wacky dialogue, and laugh out loud moments for you and friends to enjoy. The best piece of DLC for this game by far is Tiny Tina’s assault of Dragon Keep. It’s very creative but to avoid game breaking spoilers it’s best that you beat the game first before you start her quests.
Borderlands 2 is a great game and deserves all the hype it got. Gearbox really improved this game over the first one in every way and gave us one hell of a game. If you’ve never played this game then i’d recommend buying it for consoles. While the PC version of this game looks a lot better then on consoles; the console version is superior because of the local coop it brings to the table. My final verdict for Borderlands 2 is a 9/10. This is a must own game that i’ve purchased twice. Borderlands 2 is a content filled game with plenty of laughs, and action to keep you busy for a long time.
