I went ahead and brought Dynasty Warriors 8 last night despite some people complaining not being able to play a single stage in story mode. So far I haven’t encountered any problems like that, but I have come across one infinite loading screen when I tried to change my character.
Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends is a lot of fun. I haven’t played a Dynasty Warriors game in a long time and I had a blast last night. I do have some complaints that bugged me though. There is no voice acting before each stage starts. You just have to read subtitles until a cutscene happens. In every other Dynasty Warriors game that I’ve ever played there has been voice acting. It would tell us what was going on and get us ready for the battle ahead. Sitting there in silence just reading the text felt so weird because I’m not used to doing that in a Dynasty Warriors game.
The soundtrack. as usual, is amazing. As you’re slaughtering thousands of enemies you’ll treated to some nice metal tunes. It’s nice to see that Dynasty Warriors is sticking to it’s roots and not trying to change too much. I do wish that I could create my own character like I could in part 4 back in the day.
The story so far is good, but it was better in part 7. The voice acting is better in this game though. Some characters sound really, really good while others, Zhang Liao, sound worse in my opinion. He sounded better in part 7. I also don’t like how the game rushed through some important battles. After I did one stage Sun Jian died and Sun Ce became the new leader of Wu. It’s disappointing, but I’m hoping that it slows down a little as the story progresses.
The gameplay is great and that’s where this game shines. It’s Dynasty Warriors and everyone knows what you’re supposed to do in a Dynasty Warriors game and that’s kill shit. I haven’t tried out too many characters yet, but so far everyone that I tried is great. As you’re fighting mobs of enemies you’ll slowly build up your rage and musou gauges. When they’re full you’ll be able to unleash a powerful attack that does massives amount of damage on enemies. I like to save my attack for enemy officers because you’ll most likely end up fighting more than one. You can unleash your built up rage by clicking on the control stick. Once you’re in rage mode your attacks are much stronger and you can unleash your ultimate musou attack by holding down the B button.
Keep in mind that I played this game with a Xbox 360 controller. There was no way I was going to play this game with a mouse and keyboard.
The graphics are the best they’ve ever been in the series and instead of enemies just disappearing when there’s too many on the screen you’ll literally be surrounded by tons of npcs trying to kill you.
At the moment I’m finding it hard to say anything negative about Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends. I’m only two hours in the game so far and I can’t wait to jump back in later today. I want to try some multiplayer with Lunaliah. I always had problems with Dynasty Warriors in splitscreen because most of the enemies would vanish while I’m trying to fight them and I would magically take damage from everyone. Dynasty Warriors 8 Xtreme Legends is the number one game on Steam right now. It beat Day Z, Watchdogs, and Spec Ops The Line.
Hopefully it will continue to sell well on the PC and we’ll see more Dynasty Warriors games come to the PC in the future. How awesome would it be if we got Empires on it?
