F.E.A.R. 2 Review

Happy Halloween everyone! My massive Halloween Project is here and throughout the course of the day and well into the night I’ll be releasing multiple post about various different horror games and movies including my Top 10 Best Horror Games of All Time!

F.E.A.R. 2 has aged pretty well for a game that released back in 2009 and I still think it has the best gameplay of any FPS game I’ve ever played in my life.

The Great:


The F.E.A.R. series has always had fantastic gameplay. Part 2 refined what was great about the first game and improved on it. Everything I did felt really good and fluid. When I’m surrounded by soldiers I have no problems whatsoever taking them all out because of the fluid controls that this game has.Nothing felt stiff to me back in the day when I played it on the Xbox 360 and that continues to be true today when I played it on PC. This is one area of the game that Monolith Productions nailed. Sprinting, shooting, climbing, sliding, etc. It all feels incredibly good and it’s still better than everyone else that’s released after it. 


F.E.A.R. 2 starts off a little before the ending of the first game. Instead of playing as Point Man we play as Becket in an entirely different squad. At the beginning of the game we’re sent on a rescue mission, but it all turns to hell and we get our first glimpse of Alma in her true adult form.Alma is attracted to Becket from the very beginning of the game and most of the time we’re trying to escape from her clutches and put a stop to her once and for all. I really enjoyed the story in F.E.A.R. 2. It was filled with intense moments, cheesy voice acting, and of course… great scares.


Alma is the star of the show here. She’s scary, sexy, twisted, and a badass all in one. Every time I think of the F.E.A.R. series I think of the elementary school in F.E.A.R. 2. Alma threw everything she had at me and more. I was too afraid to walk down the long hallways, or enter the restrooms because I knew she had something in store for me. It doesn’t matter how many times I play this game I’m still filled with dread every time I enter that damn school…


Everything from the soundtrack, to Alma’s creepy laughing is spot on. F.E.A.R. 2 does a great job at setting up scares and disguising them. That’s harder to do then most people think in horror games, and movies. When I think something is scary is about to happen I start moving slowly and I try my best to prepare myself for whatever Alma will throw at me. Imagine my surprise when nothing happens. That’s what I like that this game does and it’s all because of the amazing ambient sounds, soundtrack, and of course… Alma. The soundtrack is great and does a great job of making me feel anxious and the ambient sounds are fucking incredible. The voice acting ranges from good to terrible. It’s there to move the story along, but don’t expect any AAA performances from anyone in this game. 

The Good:


Back in 2009 this would have been in my great category because at the time they were top-notch graphics on the 360. I can tell that this game has aged when I look at the character models. They don’t look terrible, but they do look dated. The environments still look great and the lighting, on the PC port, is excellent for the most part. This game has aged incredibly well and still plays incredibly well. The character models are obviously dated like everything on the Xbox 360/PS3 days. We have protagonist that look so real now that their beard hair sways in the wind. That obviously doesn’t happen in this game, but nothing looks “bad” in this game and the lighting is still very impressive and is backed by some fantastic ambient sounds. 

Mech Combat:

I was never a huge fan of the giant mech sections that were in the F.E.A.R. games. They’re not terrible, but they’re definitely not the strong point of the game. Every time I entered a mech all of the tension that I built up inside me would fade away because I knew I was safe inside that big ass piece of metal. I still enjoyed blowing the crap out of clones though…

Level Design:

F.E.A.R. 2 has the best level design in the F.E.A.R. trilogy. I know hardcore fanboys of the first F.E.A.R. game is probably going to disagree with me on this, but nothing I experienced in any F.E.A.R. game came close to the excellence of that elementary school stage. That stage alone is enough for me to recommend the game to anyone that wants to play a good FPS/Horror hybrid. That’s not the only great stage though. There’s the hospital, ruins, a creepy ass nurse’s office, and then fighting Alma off inside a creepy dream like scenario are all stages that stick out to me when I think of this game.

The Bad:


I don’t know why developers force multiplayer down our throats so much. F.E.A.R. 2 is a perfect game without multiplayer. The multiplayer portion of this game is just stupid, and uninspiring. There’s nothing there that would drag me away from the excellent single player campaign.

The Verdict

F.E.A.R. 2 improved on it's predecessor in every way. That's what a sequel is supposed to do and it holds a special place in my heart because it managed to do something that doesn't happen very often when I play horror games and that's scare the crap out of me. Alma continued to steal the show like she did in the first one, but she was better as a grown woman. I never knew when to expect her because the devs did such a great job at disguising the scares in this game.
