Gamer Confessions Tag

Spread the Word!

I was scrolling through the good ole wordpress feed and found something that caught my eye. I decided to join in on this community project and post my own gamer confessions tag!

I discovered this post over at a geeky gal. It’s run by Megan and I drop in every now and then to check out what she’s working on. She’s a very talented writer and I recommend checking her out.

I also recommend checking out a geek girls guide. This idea came from there.

Lets get to answering those questions!

A game everyone loves that you can’t stand

That’s right folks. I can’t stand the Uncharted games. I don’t like the characters, story, or gameplay. I’ve never completed any of them, but I have played them all (except 4) and I made it pretty far in part 3 before I quit. I don’t understand the appeal to them and I think Naughty Dog is an incredibly overrated developer that tries too hard to make their games like movies. I know I’m in the minority here, but that’s how I feel :).

A game that you love, but no one else seems to

This one is easy. Mass Effect: Andromeda gets a lot more hate than love. The controversy turned a lot of people away from this game, but I love it. It can’t live up to the original trilogy. This game had huge shoes to fill and yes, it fell short, but that doesn’t make it a bad game.

An older game you haven’t finished, and probably never will

Two Worlds II is my answer for this one. I completed the first one and almost finished this one. I just stopped playing it. It’s not a terrible game by any means, but it’s not very good either. I honestly don’t remember much about this game and the odds of me every going back to it are very slim. I really like the spell crafting system though. Making a tornado out of garbage was awesome.

A guilty pleasure game

Nothing helps me get over a stressful day like killing thousands of people in a Dynasty Warriors game.

A game you really love but haven’t played in a long time

Mass Effect 2 is a masterpiece. I haven’t played it in a long time, but I’m always here telling everyone how much I love this game. It’s number 2 on my top 10 games of all time and if there’s one series I would love to see a complete remaster of it’s Mass Effect.

A game you never play seriously but others do

The only reason I played Destiny was because my friends did. I never cared about it. The horrible customization, story, and end game (I didn’t stick around for the DLCs) was enough for me to quit this game and never go back.

A game you completed but hated it by the end

The further I got into Battleborn the worse it got. The only reason why I played this game is because my wife liked it. It was pure torture for me and once we finished it I immediately uninstalled it from my PC. Fuck this game.

A game you thought you’d enjoy, but didn’t

I was so excited for this game. F.E.A.R. 1 & 2 are excellent games. What the hell happened with part 3? This game pretty much killed the F.E.A.R. series. The last time I heard anything about this series is was turned into a horrible MMO game.

A game you didn’t think was for you, and then loved

Strategy games like Total War were alien to me when I first started PC gaming. When I was introduced to this series I was instantly hooked and ended up putting about 200 hours in Shogun 2 before moving on to Rome 2. After trying this series I moved on to the core Civilization games. I had only played Civilization Revolution before then. Total War Shogun 2 opened up a whole new gaming experience for me.

A game you are still excited for that hasn’t come out yet

This one is easy. The Elder Scrolls VI has been number 1 on my list since I completed Skyrim and that won’t change until it releases. I want Bethesda to take their sweet time with the next Elder Scrolls game and make a masterpiece just like all the games that came before it.

How DARE you not like Uncharted!!!

I’m just kidding. I totally get it. I love Uncharted 4, but only because the mechanics were so solid and I felt like they established the story so well, in addition to the relationship between Nathan and Elena. However, if you aren’t a fan of the series, characters, or setting, I don’t know if there’s any redeeming factors to get you interested.

Good list! Even if I disagree on some points. I can’t remember if I did this already.

I’m the other way with Uncharted. I found the story and characters enjoyable, but the controls just weren’t as tight as I wanted, making the shooting more awkward than I could put up with. I finished the first 2 but I’d had enough by that point.

I’ve only really enjoyed the last Uncharted to be honest. I played through the first three, but the controls weren’t nearly as good.

Well that’s good to know that they sorted it out at least. I’ve heard that the shooting controls have often been a weakness in Naughty Dog games.

That’s my biggest problem with Uncharted to be honest. It’s good to know that part 4 has better controls.

The only thing I can praise Uncharted for is the acting and voice acting. Everything else didn’t click with me. I absolutely hated the controls to these games.

I think I remember reading something like this on your blog :).

Whilst “can’t stand” is a strong term, I’m fairly with you on Uncharted. I played the first two and thought they were ok, but the loose shooting controls really put me off, and those bosses were just terrible. Still, the stories were fun.

The characters are well acted in Uncharted. The voice actors are excellent too, but I just never got sucked into it’s world like everyone else did. The shooting controls are bad (don’t know for Uncharted 4), but I think that might be because it’s on Playstation. I’ve never been a fan of the dual shock controllers from Sony and have always preferred the Xbox controllers.

I hadn’t considered that. I often find I don’t get on with shooter controls on PlayStation. I wonder if it’s a controller issue for me.

It could be. I’ve played shooters both on Playstation and Xbox and 100% of the time they play better on Xbox for me. The control sticks are better on Xbox and it’s just more smooth for me. I struggled a lot with Playstation. Even on the PS4 when I played Destiny and that game plays great on X1.

If I had the time I would double dip on a game and compare them. But that seems like a waste for me, so I’ll just stick to getting most of my games on Xbox and keep PlayStation as an exclusive machine.

That’s a good idea. I don’t own an Xbox or Playstation anymore, but I do have an Xbox One controller that I use for certain games on PC. I think it’s the best controller ever made.

I prefer the 360 personally (I use on for my PC gaming) as I find the shape a touch more comfortable. It’s nice that there are so many controller options available now. I remember back when controllers on PC were terrible (unless it was a joystick).

I love the Uncharted games, they really nail the Indiana Jones vibe.

Dynasty Warriors is just fantastic. They’re not brilliant but that’s part of the appeal. They are great games to play when you want to relax or relieve stress. Put DW (or any Warriors game) on easy and go nuts. Also the Dynasty Warriors series has some killer music.

I did admit that I’m in the minority with my dislike of Uncharted :).

And I agree with everything you said except one thing on Dynasty Warriors. I love playing the game on hard or chaos. Depends on my mood :).

I play Dynasty Warriors on normal then jump to hard and chaos. After a stressful day though, DW on easy is very cathartic.

I agree. If I’ve had a bad day nothing beats playing on a low difficulty and slaughtering millions of people in Dynasty Warriors :).

Mass Effect is definitely on my Top 10 Best Game Stories list. Like it made me reconsider the whole action RPG genre, which I had no interest in before. It’s the best western RPG I’ve ever seen and when people try to rag on the voice acting in games, I point them in ME’s direction. I haven’t even played it myself, but I could gush about that game forever.

I might give this one a try. I haven’t done a gamer tag in a while.

Mass Effect is so good. I love all four games and I miss playing them. I have no idea on where I would rank the series on my top 10 best stories list, but I know they’ll be really high up the list if not at the very top.

This was fun to do and responses I received from everyone was amazing. I’ll definitely check out your answers if you decide to do one again :).
