Hit or Miss – August Part 1

Spread the Word!

My birthday month is almost here and I already know what I want. I thought now would be a good time to bring back my hit or miss series.

For those of you that are new here every month I go through a large list of games and decide which ones are worth buying and which ones aren’t. So if something gets a “hit” that means I’m going to buy it and if something gets a “miss” that means I won’t. And (more importantly) thank you for subscribing to drakulus.com! I look forward to our future disagreements :).

Madden NFL 19 (Xbox One/PS4/PC)

Lets start with the game that’s at the very top of my list. I haven’t played Madden in years and I was incredibly surprised when EA announced that the series would return to PC. This is the game I plan on buying on my B-day and the one I’m most excited for. I can’t wait to play the crap out of this game next month.

Verdict – Hit!

Yakuza 0 (PC)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I think this is the first Yakuza game on PC… and I have absolutely no interest in it. The series has never appealed to me and it looks like a game that would give me a headache. I would rather not play another game in this series.

Verdict – Miss!

Monster Hunter World (PC)

Monster Hunter is going to PC for the very first time and I’m super excited to play it. This game isn’t at the top of my list, but I’ll most likely end up buying this before September. I briefly played this on the Xbox One earlier this year before I sold my Xbox (again) and decided to wait for the PC release. What I played has me wanting more, but I’m not one of those hardcore Monster Hunter fans and can live without it for awhile because I know 90% of my gaming time will go to Madden.

Verdict – Hit!

Warioware Gold (3DS)

3DS games are still a thing? I love my 3DS, but I don’t see myself buying anymore games on it because I’ve been spoiled with the Switch. That… and I fucking hate anything Wario related.

Verdict – Miss!

The Walking Dead Final Season (Xbox One/PS4/PC)

Telltale games have some excellent games. None of them are The Walking Dead.

Verdict – Miss!

Dead Cells (PC/PS4/Xbox One/Switch)

Dead Cells has been in early access for awhile now. It finally has a release date and I’m finally going to buy it. It’s a neat looking Metroidvania with roguelike elements. Honestly I’m not a fan of roguelite games, but this game looks really neat and I cant wait to play it.

Verdict – Hit!

Death’s Gambit (PC/PS4)

Death’s Gambit is almost here! I’ve been waiting for this game to release for years and the wait is almost over. This game is right under Madden on my list of most wanted games. I can’t wait to try this game out.

Verdict – Hit!

We Happy Few (Xbox One/PS4/PC)

I’ve been keeping track of this game for quite awhile and I’m honestly not really looking forward to it, but I can see myself buying it at some point down the road. August has a lot of games that I really want so this one will probably be a winter sale for me on Steam.

Verdict – Wait For Sale

Okami (Switch)

Okami is finally releasing on the Switch! And I don’t care! If you do that’s cool though.

Verdict – Miss!

Monster Hunter Generations (Switch)

The re-release of a 3DS game is $60 on the Switch. Let that sink in for a moment. Why should I buy this over Monster Hunter World? I’m not.

Verdict – Miss!

Divinity: Original Sin 2 (Xbox One/PS4)

Original Sin 2 is amazing. It’s one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played and I highly recommend going out and buying this game as soon as it releases. This game is better than it’s predecessor in every possible way and bought some much needed changes to an old genre. I won’t be picking this up (I don’t own a Playstation or Xbox) so it’s getting a miss from me, but I recommend that you do if you love RPGs, don’t like having your hand held, and do own one of the two consoles mentioned above. You can check out my thoughts of Original Sin 2 here. It also won a few awards from me in my game of the year post I did a few months ago. You can click here for that one.

Verdict – Miss!

Nothing throughout the month I’m particularly interested in outside of the new WoW expansion, which is fine since it gives me time to chip away at Octopath Traveler. Yakuza 0 was a great game, though. Japanese crime melodrama at its finest and tons of shit to do outside of the main story. I think you’d dig it if you gave it a chance.

I probably would like it if I bought it, but Madden man. I’m a sports nut and the fact that there’s a football game releasing that I don’t have to buy a console to enjoy is fantastic. You should check out Death’s Gambit if you’re into Metroidvania games. It looks really good.

Wow… is a hard game for me to get into. I wouldn’t know where to start and I don’t like being super behind or overwhelmed in my MMOs lol.

I’m super burnt out on metroidvanias, man.

They changed WoW where you don’t have to buy it anymore, you pay the $15 sub fee and have access to all content up to the current expansion (Legion). Like ESO, you do have to buy the new expansion (Battle for Azeroth, which doesn’t come out until next month). They reworked WoW so leveling scales and you don’t have to run all over the world to find the next quest hub. It’s nice. I’m leveling a new character now that I’ve unlocked one of the new races. It’s a good time to give it a shot, but 14 years of content is hard to swallow I bet.

Damn. I’m sorry you’re burnt out on the genre. I’ve only played Hollow Knight and that game is fantastic. I’m not burnt out on the genre, but I know the feeling :).

WoW definitely sounds interesting, but I’ve got 14 years of catching up to do. That’s an incredible challenge that I’m not sure I’m ready for. I might go ahead and install it on my PC though since I’m curious. Maybe I’ll run into you if I make it far enough :).

I like this series so I’m certainly glad to see it back. The only thing this month leaping out at me is Dead Cells, but I’m more interested in getting it on Switch due to the portability.

I had no idea it was going to Switch. I’ll update the platforms and add it in. I’m all for Dead Cells on the Switch. When/if Death’s Gambit releases on the Switch I’ll double dip on that.

That and metroidvanias play really well on the Switch. Hollow Knight was amazing the second time around because I could play it on the go.

How come walking dead gets no love? I agree it’s not telltale’s best series but it’s a close second in my book!

I’ve never been a fan of The Walking Dead. Batman, The Wolf Among Us, and Borderlands is the only thing I care about from Telltale Games :).

Omg I wanted to like Okami SO BADLY, but I couldn’t get into it. I only watched a bit of an LP and it just didn’t grip me. I can see why it appeals to people (especially fans of Legend of Zelda…of which I am one, too), but I found all of the characters kind of annoying. If it had focused more on the wolf you play (and maybe didn’t have that weird voicing almost like Banjo Kazooie), I might have been more into it.

I don’t know why they’re still releasing things for the 3DS when they have the Switch. That’s kind of weird. I’m glad they’re starting to port some of the Wii U games over like Captain Toad. I didn’t want to buy a Wii U, but I was thinking about it to play stuff like that. There’s a Xenosaga game I’m still hoping they’ll port as well.

I love Legend of Zelda too, but I couldn’t get into Okami at all. I tried, but it’s not for me. I know many people love the game though.

I… didn’t like Captain Toad. I played the demo and I really don’t like the game. The surprising part is my kids didn’t like it either. I thought for sure they would want it, but they don’t. So I went and bought Octopath with the money lol.

Are you talking about Xenoblade on the Wii U?

It’s weird because I thought I’d love Okami and I wanted to love it, but I didn’t.

Aw, did they find it too difficult or too boring? I heard that some kids found it a bit difficult. I was going to buy Octopath this weekend, but I need to wait until I get paid again lol.

        That’s the one!

They found it boring and difficult. I thought it was a terrible game when I tried it too so I’m glad I don’t have to buy it. The next two games I’m getting on the Switch is Pokemon and Smash.

Xenoblade X is fantastic. It’s way better than Xenoblade 2 to me. I love the open world, skells, and being able to create my own character. Xenoblade 2 is really good though. I hope they do port it over to the Switch because I no longer own a Wii U.

It is a bit difficult. I’m not going to lie. I died in the demo hehe. I think it’s geared towards older puzzle gamers. It’s cute, but it’s deceptive in that. I just played the demo for Kirby All Stars and that game is adorable AND fun. It was pretty easy to get into, but damn…I can’t spend another $60 on a game.

I hope so, too. It would be good for the company…and they could charge their normal $60 for it ugh. Freaking Nintendo…

The biggest problem I have with the Switch is the high prices for all of their games. There’s no way Captain Toad (a Wii U port) and Hyrule Warriors should be $60. I’ll let Kirby slide since it’s a Switch exclusive, but it is the most expensive Kirby game ever made to my knowledge and I don’t like that one more than Planet Robobot on the 3DS which was a $40 game.

I could not agree more. The big new releases like Octopath, fine. That’s the usual price for a new game, but there’s no reason a port should be that expensive. $30 at the most is my opinion, which means nothing to Nintendo. It’s not like they’re NOT making bank on people buying new games and Switch exclusives. Most people aren’t going to buy a Wii U for just one or two games especially now that they’re porting stuff to the Switch. The Wii U wasn’t that popular to begin with. I was considering one to play that Xenosaga game that’s exclusive to it, but I’m pretty sure they’re going to port that eventually.
