Hit or Miss – January 2020

Spread the Word!

Hit or Miss has been gone since November. Why? Because December rarely has games worth writing about and I usually always skip it. So here’s my first Hit or Miss in 2020!

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (PC)

This is the month of the DLC and DLC announcements. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne originally released on consoles last year. PC gamers are finally getting a chance to play it now. It looks really good and I really, really want it! I know I’ll eventually cave and buy it.

Verdict – Hit!

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

I’ve never been a DBZ fan. I don’t like the cartoon, I don’t like any of the characters and I can count on one hand how many games I thought were good in this series (two). I’m not interested in Kakarot at all. It looks like a really average open-world game.

Verdict – Miss!

Tokyo Mirage Sessions

This game was advertised as Shin Megami Tensei meets Fire Emblem. That’s actually not accurate. This Persona meets Fire Emblem. Yes, Persona is actually really different than Fire Emblem. Tokyo Mirage Sessions is excellent. I love it and I’ve gotta shout out my friends Shelby and Jennifer for buying this game for me. I’m really enjoying it and if you’re on the fence about whether or not it’s worth it. I think it is. It’s a great JRPG that’ll scratch that Persona itch for you. It just doesn’t have the school stuff.

This game is as much a Fire Emblem game as it is a Persona game. There are little things that only hardcore Fire Emblem fans would recognize and I think that’s really neat. It’s also super stylish and has a great soundtrack too. Buy it!

Verdict – Hit!

Kingdom Hearts III Re:Mind

I hated Kingdom Hearts III. I didn’t like anything about it. So I obviously won’t be purchasing this DLC for the game.

Verdict – Miss!

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire (PS4 & Xbox One)

I love this game, but I can’t recommend on a console. It’s not the same experience and I don’t think CRPGs play very well on consoles. It’s a fantastic game though. Just not on console.

Verdict – Miss!

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

If I owned a VR I would probably buy this. I don’t so it’s a miss.

The Verdict – Miss!

Wizardry: Labyrinth of Lost Souls

Wizardry is back and doesn’t look that bad. It’s also really cheap too. I might buy this because I am a fan of the series and genre, but I already have a lot of on plate so I’m not sure yet.

Verdict – Undecided!

Atelier Dusk Trilogy DX

All three games in the Atelier Dusk series dropped on the same day on Steam. It’s $80 for all 3 or you can buy them individually at $40 a game. You’ll save money on the bundle. I’m a fan of the Atelier games and I’ll know I’ll get these eventually.

Verdict – Hit!

And that’s it! Thank wraps up my first Hit or Miss for 2020! What games are you adding to your collection this month?

I’m really thinking about the Atelier games because I love RPGs. I saw the bundle on the Switch, and if I do get them I’m going to go with that. I do want to check to see if I own any of them already though. I may have bought one or two from Brad/Trash.

I really like the Atelier games. I’ve never completed a single one though even though I own two or three of them. They’re good JRPGs that don’t take 100 hours to complete. The problem I have with them is that they’re so expensive and they rarely drop in price. To get the bundle is like $90.

I like the idea of a shorter JRPG, but yeah that price is a bit high. I was saying the other day how Nintendo NEVER drops their prices on anything (though I know the Atelier games aren’t Nintendo). I was looking at Bravely Default, the original one, and it’s STILL in the $40-$50 range. $90 for three games isn’t terrible, but I picked up the original Phoenix Wright Trilogy for $30, which I feel is way more reasonable, but that’s Capcom.

They’re the same price on PC. I guess you could buy them one at a time for $40 a pop, but you’ll end up spending more in the end. Capcom has some pretty unreasonable prices on the Switch too. It seems developers love getting extra money for old games on the Switch. I only buy games when they’re like 80% off on the Switch.

Yeah, it just makes more sense to just buy them all to get the discount. I can’t really be too mad at Capcom for the Ace Attorney Trilogy. It was $30 for three games. I have noticed some of the ports on the Switch seem to be pricier than you’d expect, and I think it’s for the “convenience,” which is annoying. At least the Final Fantasies are reasonably priced. I think they were all $15 or less. I do spend most of my time playing the Switch so I’m gonna get my money’s worth :p
