Lets Talk About!

Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age Is Better Than Hunt Showdown

Spread the Word!

Oh, Crytek what has happened to you? You used to make good games and now you don’t. Here’s what I think of Hunt Showdown, formerly known as Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age.

I was incredibly interested in Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age because it was a co-op experience with heavy horror influences. You teamed up with 3 other people and completed missions together by killing a bunch of crazy cultists, undead, animals, and more. It was a neat concept that was unfortunately scrapped by Crytek and later replaced with what is now known as Hunt Showdown. A shitty game that has heavy battle royal influences, but isn’t exactly one and doesn’t ease new players into its world at all.

I have a lot of issues with this game. For starters, it went from being advertised as a third person co-op experience like this

to a first person, open world PVP battle royal lite like this

I’ll give Hunt Showdown some credit because I do like the tension in this game. You have to always remain alert and be mindful of your environments and has fantastic audio from the song that plays on the main menu to the deep growls and screeches that monsters make down to the way guns sound when you fire them. There is quality here, but it’s not for me.

I wanted to play Horrors of the Gilded Age not… this shit. I’m not sure what this game wants to be. You can choose not to partake in the bounty and let other players kill the boss for you while you farm XP by killing the normal enemies on the map, but even that can be a challenge in itself because any random person (and this will happen to you) can walk up to you and blow your brains. I’ve been killed like that and it sucks because I was trying to learn the game at the time.

I didn’t know where the bullet came from or who killed me. There’s no respawning when you die (a battle royal mechanic that fucking sucks) and you’ll be sent to a long loading screen and have to join another random game. There’s no room for improvement in this game. You’ll have to be really dedicated to learning this game in order to get any enjoyment out of it and that’s just not something I’m willing to do.

I went into this game with an open mind. I wanted to like this game, but it’s too… different than what was advertised years ago. You can tell that Crytek was inspired by the battle royal genre and instead of them making a new game and leaving Gilded Age alone they butchered it and turned it into… this. Going on hunts is not fun at all. Especially for new players. You’ll have to play this game for dozens of hours before you start getting kills and surviving maps. If that sounds fun to you then go right ahead and play this game. It’s free for the weekend. As for me, I’ll rather play any other game than this. At least I’ll feel like the time I’m investing in whatever I choose will reward me.
