I Am Setsuna First Impression

Spread the Word!

I finally got my hands on I Am Setsuna at a reasonable price. So far it’s your typical JRPG and relies heavily on nostalgia to get people into the game.

I am Setsuna is okay so far. I’m not in love with it, but I don’t hate it either. One thing I do like is the gameplay. I kind of miss the old turn based battle system of yesteryear. I am Setsuna’s gameplay is stiff, but serviceable.  The animations are poor, but the graphics are really nice.

The story is complete crap so far, but I’m hoping it’ll pick up soon. Setsuna is a pretty cool character, but everyone else I’ve met so far isn’t. I’m only a few hours in and I really hope my opinion will change about everyone.

The repetitiveness of the game set in about an hour after I started. I don’t see myself playing this for hours on end. This will probably be one of those games that’s best enjoyed in short burst.

I like the depressive atmosphere and the fact that Setsuna is willingly walking to her death. I did read some really good lines of dialogue, but I’m not really invested enough in the story to care about everything just yet.

The game is also really easy so far. Normal mobs posed no threat at all to my low level party and I steamrolled through. Bosses were a little tougher, but still went down after I put in a little effort.

The PC port is terrible. The performance is awesome. There are no graphical glitches or lag spikes in the game so far, but I can tell that this game was designed with controllers in mind because there is no mouse support at all. I can’t click on any of the options in the game or in battle. I have to navigate the menu with WASD or the arrow keys. The J button brings up the menu while the K button takes you back to a previous screen.

This is just a bad design choice in my opinion. Every PC game should let me click on things with my mouse. I don’t like navigating menus with my keyboard. Even Dark Souls let me do that and those games are notorious for having bad PC ports. Dark Souls III is the exception in my opinion.

Pressing the esc button brings up the exit menu. I pressed it thinking it would back me out of the menu, but instead I almost lost two hours of progress because it asked me if I wanted to quit the game. I am Setsuna works like a app and I hate that.

Do you have I am Setsuna? What did you think of it?

I really like the depressive nature of the story, the snow covered world, and full-on piano OST. The OST is probably my favorite thing about it thus far, honestly. It’s really great.

I like the combat system, especially storing up action points to deal more damage or add additional benefits to spells, like shields, heals, and lowering elemental resistances.

It’s a very old-school RPG in terms of dialogue, with most NPCs summarizing each other instead of offering something new with each citizen interaction. Character dialogue is also just passable. I’m not totally enthralled by the content of the story, but moreso intrigued by how dark it is. Very FFX meets Chrono Trigger, overall.

I thought the soundtrack was a bit average to be completely honest. It’s nothing I haven’t heard before and that’s the problem with me. I love the piano themes, but it never mixes it up at all. I put about another into the game after I wrote this and I couldn’t play anymore from fatigue.

The combat is really simple in my opinion. It gets repetitive and doesn’t have lasting appeal to me. The nostalgia factor comes in with the old school dialogue and character interaction. It’s just not that good and I hope it gets better as I play it.

So far it’s a pretty average game, but it does have some charm to it. I don’t hate it, but I don’t like it either. FFX is one of my least favorite games of all time btw :]. Chrono Trigger was good at the time, but I doubt I’ll ever consider it one of the best RPGs ever like other people do.

Haha, I’m just comparing it to FFX for the obvious similarities between Setsuna and Yuna (both being guarded along a mission to sacrifice themselves for the “greater good.”). I’d be lying if I said I hated the game, but it’s near the bottom of the numbered, non-MMO entries.

Yeah I know :]. I am curious to see if we actually have to sacrifice Setsuna. That alone will probably keep me playing the game despite it’s shortcomings.

I’m about 5 hours in right now and planned to play it over the weekend, but ended up working on something for a review instead. Hopefully I’ll have time to get back in before Monday.

I wanted to play it this weekend too, but ended up putting four hours into Bioshock Infinite last night instead. I doubt I’ll play any games today since I’m a football nut and I plan on watching every game today. My Colts needs to win today or I’m going to be pissed :].

Haha, yeah we’re a month away from hockey season, so I’m counting the days ’til the puck drops. I’m a Ravens guy, but having moved away from Maryland for a while now, I find it harder to pay attention without paying for the NFL streaming sub.
