Many people consider Joe Montana the greatest post season Quarterback of all time and for good reason. He’s been to 4 Superbowls and walked away with 4 rings. In an interview he had Joe said that he thinks Colin Kaepernick has great talent but he needs to stay in the pocket more and give his receivers a shot down the field. We all know that Colin Kaepernick doesn’t have the awareness of other QB’s and he’s quick to take off running. His accuracy has dropped this year and his run percentage has went up as a result. Montana’s exact words were:
“I like his mobility and that he’s getting the ball downfield, but sometimes, he needs to be more accurate in the pocket with pressure.
“The game is changing,” he said. “Nobody wants to throw with pressure anymore. But the guys who can win in this league are the ones who can make throws from the pocket.”
Montana also stated that he thinks Kaepernick needs to learn how to take a hit in the pocket and not be so quick to run off at the first sign of trouble. Here is what he had to say:
“Kaepernick still needs to get better at that,” Montana said. “He’ll look and then he’s off and running. I still think the thing is the pocket and making those tight throws from the pocket.”
Montana also made a statement about his accuracy. He thinks it’s an issue and here’s what he had to say about that:
“He’ll make some, but a lot of times guys are wide open, and he misses them.”
Joe Montana’s criticism isn’t off when it comes to Colin Kaepernick. He overthrows guys all the time. Kaepernick has a cannon for an arm and if he showed a little more awareness in the pocket then he could be a very dangerous Quarterback because of his athleticism. Don’t take what Montana said about Colin Kaepernick as something negative. That seems to be the impression that a lot of people had. He simply thinks that Colin Kaepernick has a lot of room for improvement in his young career and he’s right. I think any type of criticism that Joe Montana gives a young Quarterback should be praised. That man had one hell of a career and he’s one of my favorite Quarterbacks of all time.
I think Joe was spot on in his assessment of Colin Kaepernick but there’s always room for improvement and if Kaepernick is willing to learn then he’ll be a great QB someday. I don’t consider Kaepernick a winner because he blew the big game. The 49ers had a chance to win a Superbowl and they blew it. It wasn’t all his fault but he’s the Quarterback and the blame will naturally go to the QB’s.
