Conan Exiles is currently free on Steam for the weekend and against my better judgment, I decided to try it out and play it.
I rarely enjoy survival games. When I do it’s usually because it’s something different than your average one. I enjoyed Subnautica and it’s underwater creepiness. It gave me full control of how I wanted to experience the game and didn’t force the survival mechanics, that I never wanted, on me. I also really enjoyed Outward and that ended up being one of the best co-op games I’ve ever played in my life. I’ll throw Fade to Silence in there too because I thought that the game was great.
I can officially add Conan Exiles to that list. I went in thinking I would hate it, but I don’t. I actually really like it. I told myself I would play it for 30 minutes and I ended up playing it for two hours last night before bed after that horrible game award show. Conan Exiles is a slow burn though. It took a while for me to figure out what the hell I was doing and it even gave me the option to turn off all of the survival mechanics. I didn’t. But the fact that I can is a plus to me.
Conan Exiles has the same stuff that other games in the genre have. You run around, butt naked in this game, gathering various different materials while crafting stuff to help you survive in its harsh world. The combat is… serviceable and I felt like I accomplished something once I managed to create myself some starting gear by hunting wild animals in the area. I did die a few times from some violent NPCs, but it was part of the learning process for me. Once I geared up I was able to defend myself just fine and I even managed to win against 3 of them at the same time by timing my shots.
I created myself a house, got butt naked and explored underwater, and just explored and I really enjoyed it. The gameplay isn’t good, but it’s not horrible and I usually enjoy games that I can build things in. Conan Exiles surprised me. I didn’t think I would enjoy it, but being able to play on my own and not have to worry about some asshole killing me over and over while I learn the game is really neat. I feel like I can take my time to learn everything before tackling the multiplayer. I can see myself owning this game eventually. I’m enjoying and I’ll play it a little more before the free weekend ends. I might even review it.
Have you played Conan Exiles? What did you think of it?
