I have about 45 hours in Dauntless. I’ve been playing this game on and off for quite a while now and decided to come back to give the new 1.0 update a try and since this game is now on consoles I went ahead and loaded my character up on the PS4 so this will be covering both the PC and PS4 versions of Dauntless!
Dauntless is a decent Monster Hunter clone, but it does have a LOT of issues right now. Most of the issues that I’ve experienced were not even in the beta that I played last year. The servers are complete and utter shit and while I like the fact that I can play with console gamers it’s not really a big deal to me. I’m going to sound like an elitist prick here, but I don’t know any other way to state this. I don’t like playing with new players in this game. They don’t know what they’re doing, they don’t play as a team, and every monster I went up against stayed at 100% the entire fight because everyone would drop like flies over, and over, and over again.
It made it incredibly difficult for me to farm and I ended up just soloing everything because I didn’t want to deal with any more new people. That’s not really a negative thing about the game itself. It’s just my own personal thing that I don’t like about the game. From now on, I’ll only play with people that personally know because I’m tired of babysitting in this game.
I mentioned that Dauntless has a lot of issues. It does. When I did manage to get in the game I was kicked from the game, twice, crashed, three times, and experienced multiple infinite loading screens on PC. On the PS4 the frame rate is shit, especially in the main hub. It never sticks at a solid 30 fps because there are too many players around, the camera controls are stiff, and I experienced a bug that won’t let me see any flares anyone shoot up or let me pick up any items in the world. It’s not like I can log out and log back in because I’ll be placed in an insane queue that I don’t want to wait in anymore.
The gameplay of Dauntless is fine. It’s like a watered down Monster Hunter and there’s nothing wrong with that. This could be a good game to jump into if you’re trying to get into this genre. Monster Hunter can be overwhelming to new players. Dauntless takes out most of what makes Monster Hunter so good and just focuses on the monster hunts. Unlike Monster Hunter, Dauntless’s world doesn’t feel lived in. You’ll only find a single monster on each map and once you kill them you’ll be transported back to the main hub to accept a new mission. After you kill a monster you’ll be rewarded with crafting materials that drop from their corpse. You can use these materials to craft better weapons and armor. You won’t spend nearly as much time grinding monsters in this game as you would in any of the Monster Hunter games and honestly, that’s a good thing to me. After coming from Monster Hunter to this it’s nice to not have to worry about grinding a Diablos for hours on end while praying to RNGesus that I get the drop that I need. You don’t have to worry about that at all in Dauntless.
To build a new weapon you’ll need materials that drop from a certain monster, but if you only want to upgrade if you can use the common materials that you get for successfully completing an expedition or mission. That saves on time and allowed me to experiment with each weapon until I found my favorites. Dauntless is a good game it just has a lot of issues right now. Dauntless is free to play and you’ll lose nothing trying it out. If you like Monster Hunter cater your expectations before jumping into this. This is not Monster Hunter. It’s not as deep, doesn’t have multiple monsters running around each zone nor does it have that quality that you’ll expect from those games. This game just officially launched out of beta and it needs work. If you’re willing to look past all of the server issues, fps drops, and various other bugs you’ll find a pretty good game here or you could just keep playing the king of this genre, Monster Hunter.
