Do you remember Piranha Bytes? The developers of Gothic, and those average Risen games? They’re back and developing a new game called Elex… and I can confidently say that it’s going flop already.
I don’t know what to think of Elex. On one hand it looks decent, but you can easily see how dated it is. Why does Piranha Bytes refuse to evolve their RPGs? The first Risen game was decent, but felt dated even back in 2009. Risen 3 was a solid game, but still suffered from the same clunkiness that plagued the previous two games before it. ELEX just looks bad. There’s no other way to put it. It’s 2017 not 2006 and games like this just don’t work anymore.
The animations are horrible, the gameplay is stiff, but at least the graphics are serviceable :). I don’t expect every new RPG to be like The Witcher 3 or Breath of The Wild, but I do expect them to at least be somewhat decent. The Technomancer is a good example here. The developers of that game took everything they learned from previous failures like Mars War Logs (I don’t consider this game a failure, but most people do.), and Bound by Flame and used that experience to make The Technomancer. It still had it’s issues, but it’s an obvious step in the right direction.
I don’t see any improvement in ELEX over any of Piranha Bytes previous games. The only different thing is that you have a jetpack and can hover in the air for a little while before you land on the ground, but the animations are so stiff that I doubt anyone would want to use it. I know this is “alpha” footage, but I highly doubt the game will change much before it’s release. This game just looks like Risen with a jetpack to me and that’s not a good thing. Am I being overly negative?
This game looks like Piranha Byte’s attempt at trying to capture the American audience again by making another action RPG, but what they fail to realize is it takes more than wildly swinging your sword to get us interested. The gameplay in this game looks terrible and if their previous games are anything to go by it will be. I wish them luck with this game… they’re going to need it. Only die hard Gothic fans will buy this game.
What do you think of Elex? Are you interested in it at all?
