You can stop worrying if you thought the next Ghost Recon game was going to be a Battle Royal. Ghost Recon Breakpoint is not that and it looks really good. Here’s what I think of it!
Many People consider Ghost Recon Wildlands to be the best shooter of this generation. I’m not sure where I would rank Wildlands as far as best shooters go, but it’ll be in my top 3 for sure. Breakpoint made a really good first impression for me. It’s beautiful, has better animations, gunplay, and new skills that I saw looked really good. The third person gunplay, in particular, is what caught my eye. Breakpoint looks much better than Wildlands in that area and I haven’t even played the game yet. I don’t like how crazy the running animations look though. Watching the third person gunplay reminded me a lot of The Division and that’s not a bad thing at all. The difference is I won’t have to pump 700 bullets in something before it dies. Well… I hope I won’t anyway.
Another thing that really stood out to me was the melee combat. I’m not sure exactly how it works. If it’s going to be QTE heavy or you can just run up and fuck someone up, but I really liked it. Ubisoft overhauled the injury and healing mechanics from the previous game. Your screen won’t just get really red when you’re about to die like in just about every other shooter out there. Now, you’ll start limping and won’t be able to aim your gun the way you want to until you heal. If you go down one of your partners can run over to you, pick you up, and carry you to safety. That part was probably my favorite part of the entire stream.
I noticed a few new skills on display and Ubisoft announced that character classes will be in the game too. I thought the drone was really neat and I think one of the classes will be focused on that. The melee looks like it could potentially be a class too. That the leaves the rocket launcher and medic. Don’t take what I’m writing here as gospel I’m just speculating right now from what I saw in the gameplay reveal.
The stealth mechanics have also been reworked. You can cover yourself with dirt to hide better from the enemies pursuing you, and I saw some brutal looking assassinations. I love playing stealthily so it’s a major plus that they made the stealth viable and didn’t just ignore like I feared they would.
That’s what I noticed about the gameplay. Ubisoft claims that this game will be story heavy and have dialogue options. That our choices will matter. None of that was on display today so I have no idea what to expect. It would be pretty awesome if it works the way they’re hyping it though. Ghost Recon Breakpoint looks a lot better than Wildlands. I really like the better-looking gunplay, new skills, and, well, everything that I saw more than Wildlands. I’m not going to call this a day one buy yet, but it’s close. I think more will be shown off at E3 and I honestly can’t wait to see more. Wildlands was a lot of fun, but I didn’t buy it at launch.
Raids will be coming to Breakpoint and I have no idea how they’re going to work. Will enemies be bullet sponges in this game like they are in The Division? That would go against everything Ghost Recon is. I’m not going to speculate too much on this until more is announced. I’m very excited for this game. After The Division 2 burned me I need something new to sink my teeth into and this game is making a serious case for me. I just need to see some more before I say it’s worth a full $60.
