E3… was very disappointing this year to me. That being said I do have a few games that I know I’m going to buy when they release.
Let’s start with my personal grades for each conference that I watched.
EA – D-
EA’s conference was cringy and terrible from beginning to end. They had a horrible host, showed off horrible games (yes, I’m including Star Wars in that), and was a complete waste of my time. I didn’t even watch the whole thing. I watched for Star Wars and Madden and left disappointed in both. EA’s conference was the worst one I’ve seen this year.
Xbox – D
Microsoft had a lot to prove this year with E3 and they didn’t deliver. Yes, they showed 60 games, but a good majority of those games had no gameplay and could be found on other platforms. The big exclusives for them are Halo and Gears of War 5 and they didn’t show any gameplay for either of those two games. Yes, Keanu Reeves stole the show, and possibly E3, but he’s not a video game. The conference and most of the games that I saw were complete trash and I have no interest in playing them. Microsoft failed big time here.
Bethesda – C-
Bethesda is usually one of my favorite conferences. I don’t care about how much the general public hates them. I really enjoy their games and always look forward to what I can see next. That being said their conference was pretty weak this year. I knew that going in though because The Elder Scrolls VI and Starfield are most likely still a few years away. I did see more of what I liked here than in the previous two conferences. What stood out the most to me was The Elder Scrolls Online and Ghostwire. Doom looked good and all, but there’s no way I’m paying $60 for that. It’s releasing way too close to Pokemon.
Ubisoft – D
I originally gave Ubisoft a C. After giving it some thought I dropped my grade to a D because there was really nothing shown here that I’m interested in. We’ve already seen a lot on Ghost Recon Breakpoint so I didn’t need to see any more of that game. Watch Dogs Legion is hit or miss to me. I’ve never been a fan of the series and while it was awesome watching an old lady whoop some ass and attempt some parkour I most likely will never buy the game. Just Dance is always horrible and I never want to watch people dancing at E3 again. What more can be said? There was no Splinter Cell and the only game I’m really interested in I’ve already seen a bunch on. This conference was a waste of time. Like the two before it.
Square Enix – B
Square Enix’s press conference was really good. Not only did we see gameplay of Final Fantasy 7 Remake they also announced Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles and Final Fantasy VIII remaster. I’ve never played VIII so I’m really looking forward to trying it later this year. Final Fantasy VII looks incredible and I need it. I’m also really interested in Outriders and I want to see more on that. The Last Remnant got a remaster (which I’ve known for a while would happen because it was pulled from Steam) and we’re even getting Romancing Saga 3. This was a good conference. One of the two.
Nintendo – B+
The Witcher 3 is heading to the Switch. That was my favorite announcement. I already knew about Fire Emblem and Pokemon and I’m totally getting both of those. Nothing really surprised me here and there were no WOW moments for me outside of The Witcher 3, but I really enjoyed how short this conference was and some of the games shown off. I didn’t care for any of the Smash DLC announced because I don’t care about Smash Ultimate, but I do want Link’s Awakening if it launches for like $40.
E3 sucked this year. There were no A grade conferences and the whole thing was a giant waste of time. I think I’ll do what I usually do and just catch the highlights and not watch the actual show.
Here are my favorite game announcements that I know I’m buying.
Pokemon Sword & Shield
I already knew about this game before E3 so it doesn’t really count. It made the list because it was shown off a little and I do plan on buying this game on day one.
Fire Emblem Three Houses
Here’s another day one buy for me. The same thing applies to Pokemon though. I already knew about this and wasn’t surprised to see it mentioned since it’s releasing next month.
It’s CD Projekt Red. That’s enough justification right there. The Witcher trilogy is awesome and I’m sure this will be too. That being said I already knew about this game and saw over 40 minutes of gameplay on it so I wasn’t really surprised that it was shown off this year. I knew a release date would be announced.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake
At the moment this is a PlayStation exclusive, but I’m expecting that to change. I think it’s a timed exclusivity thing and I’m willing to wait a little longer to play. That being said it looks incredible and I want it.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles Remaster
This was the shit on the Gamecube and I’m really looking forward to playing it again. I’m willing to bet you that Square Enix is going to ask for about $50 for this though…
Tales of Arise
This game is going to be incredible. Why? Because it’s a Tales of game. What more do you need to know?
Cadence of Hyrule
The best looking Zelda game isn’t even coming from Nintendo this year. Cadence of Hyrule looks fantastic and it’s only $25. I need it.
Here’s what I thought looked good, but haven’t made up my mind about yet
This game is releasing in my birthday month and would probably make a good gift to me. Will I buy it though? I have no idea. Platinum Games is very hit or miss for me.
Oninaki (or whatever it’s called)
This game looks like a good time, but I need to see a little more and know how much it’ll cost before I say it’s a buy or not. It looks really neat though.
Romancing Saga 3
This will depend on the price. Square Enix is known to have ridiculous prices on their Switch games so I’m nervous about this one.
Collection of Mana
Do you have any idea how excited I was to see these games at E3? I want them. I really do, but for $40. Two old ass games for $40 is asking too much. Why aren’t they priced like Contra? $20 would be perfect, but Square loves that cash and that’s why I’m going to wait a bit before buying them.
How could I not be impressed with this? I want this game, but I’m not willing to pay up the ass for it so it’ll depend on how much it cost before I commit to a purchase.
Link’s Awakening is going to be so good, but it’ll also most likely be $60. I’m not willing to pay that much for this game.
New IPs I’m Interested In
Shinji Mikami and his adorable protege Ikumi Nakamura? I’m sold! This game sounds super interesting and I really want to know more. Out of all of the new IPs that were announced this one has my interest the most.
There’s a lot of negativity surrounding this game. I think some people thought this would be the video game MCU. I’m glad it isn’t. If I wanted to have a subpar experience I’ll just go watch one of those shitty movies. Be original and work on your game. I’ll wait for gameplay before saying whether or not I think it’s shit.
Outriders looks, and sounds, like a third person looter shooter. I’m in. I love looter shooters and I can’t say no to another one. I need a good one to play after quitting The Division 2 so soon.
And that’s it. I don’t care about Halo or Gears of War 5 or any of the other shit that was shown. Doom looks like a good $20 title and so does Wolfenstein since I know my man B.J Blazkowicz isn’t going to be the main protagonist. What games are you interested in?
