Do you want to play a game that’s similar to Settlers or Age of Empires? Northgard is a great RTS that I have yet to conquer.
I love strategy games. They’re my favorite genre, but I’ll admit that RTS games are probably my least favorite type of strategy game because I suck at them. Northgard is proving that last part correct because I can’t for the life of me win a match. I started the game through the campaign on the normal difficulty mode and decided to learn the mechanics that were introduced to me. 3 years later all of my people starved to death because I had expanded my settlement too fast and they were consuming food faster then I could produce it. So I went ahead and started a new game, but instead of doing campaign mode I chose one of the 6 available factions and jumped right into the action. 3 years later my entire settlement was burned to the ground by angry draugr because I didn’t focus on my military strength at all. I watched my only two guards die horribly to the undead bastards and my small settlement soon after. I decided to take a break and write about my failures.
Even though I’ve yet to win a match I’m addicted to this game. I love it right now and I’m determined to get better at it. I shouldn’t try and build everything in one zone. I should spread out more so I can be getting more resources per turn. The winter season plays a big part in this game. In the summer I should focus on collecting as much food as I can so I can survive the harsh winters. Zones play a really important part in that. If I see a zone with a huge forest I can use that as my woodworking location and have a nice surplus of wood being delivered throughout my settlement. I have to learn how to micromanage everything in real time. I’m used to playing games like Civilization and taking my time while I decide what’s best to do for my kingdom. This game is different and requires me to think on the spot. I can pause the game before making important decisions, but I’m not used to watching my workers work in real time.
I like that I can’t just pile everything up in a single zone like I do in other strategy games. I have to think ahead and decide what each zone will contribute to my growing community. If I see a bunch of stones I’ll obviously want to build a quarry and if I see a lush forest a lumbermill would be the best choice. If I see an empty plain it’s perfect for food and if animals are roaming the area I can build a hunting lodge and start bringing some fresh meat into my settlement.
I haven’t made it past year 3 yet. I plan on changing that tonight. Northgard is really neat and if you’re looking for a new RTS to play I recommend it. I love the aesthetic, gameplay, and the zone capture mechanic. I just have to figure out how to keep the food flowing so my people don’t starve to death :).
Have you played Northgard? What do you think of it?
